BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy has publicly denounced Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s newly introduced Annapoorani Super Six LPG scheme, highlighting alleged discrepancies between the recent announcement and prior electoral commitments. He stated that the government had not fulfilled its promise to provide six free cooking gas cylinders per year to all households.

Thirupathy raised concerns over the shift from six cylinders to only three, asserting that the scheme now limits eligibility to families with an annual income below Rs 2.5 lakh. He questioned the rationale behind this decision, emphasising the importance of honouring electoral pledges made to the people of Tamil Nadu.

In his comments, he cited the original electoral manifesto, which included the provision for six cylinders to all households. Thirupathy stated, “Why have you deceived the people of Tamil Nadu?” He urged the state government to adhere to its promises made during the election campaign.

Details of the Annapoorani Super Six Scheme

The Annapoorani Super Six scheme was announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on August 24, 2026. Under this new initiative, eligible families will receive financial assistance equivalent to the cost of three LPG cylinders each year, which will be directly credited to their bank accounts. The implementation of this scheme is set to commence from Pongal 2027.

According to state government estimates, around 1.30 crore families with a household income below Rs 2.5 lakh are expected to benefit from this programme. The anticipated cost of implementing the scheme is approximately Rs 4,000 crore annually.

Chief Minister Vijay indicated that rising LPG prices and shortages stemming from geopolitical conflicts in the Gulf region have imposed a significant financial burden on households. He expressed that the government’s decision aims to ease this financial strain while also fulfilling commitments made to the public.

Election Manifesto Promises and Public Sentiment

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by Vijay, previously pledged in its election manifesto to provide every household with six free LPG cylinders each year. This promise had garnered considerable public support during the election campaign. Thirupathy’s criticisms have brought to light the perceived disparity between the government’s prior commitments and the current announcement.

The response from the BJP underscores ongoing dissatisfaction with the government’s revised scheme and its perceived inadequacy in addressing the needs of households.
