3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Myanmar at 70 km Depth Amid Series of Tremors

The CSR Journal Magazine

On February 21, an earthquake registering a magnitude of 3.8 occurred in Myanmar, according to a statement from the National Center for Seismology. The seismic event took place at a depth of 70 kilometers. The earthquake’s details were shared through a post, which indicated the coordinates as 20.42° N latitude and 94.77° E longitude and timestamps showing the event occurred at 17:01:33 IST.

Recent Earthquakes in the Region

This recent quake follows several others that struck the area in the preceding days. On February 18, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake was recorded at a depth of 110 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 21.98° N latitude and 94.53° E longitude at 00:52:39 IST. The National Center for Seismology also noted an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on February 17, occurring at a depth of 120 kilometers, with coordinates 25.44° N latitude and 95.26° E longitude at 21:58:52 IST.

Shallow Earthquake Concerns

On February 17, another earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 struck Myanmar at a notably shallow depth of 10 kilometers. This shallow depth raises concerns for the potential for aftershocks, as seismic waves from such earthquakes can lead to more intense shaking. The event took place at 04:39:13 IST and had its epicenter identified at 21.34° N latitude and 94.12° E longitude. Shallow earthquakes are generally deemed more hazardous compared to deeper ones because of the shorter distance seismic waves must travel to reach the surface. This can result in more substantial damage to buildings and increased risk of casualties.

Geological Vulnerabilities in Myanmar

Myanmar is susceptible to the effects of moderate and significant earthquakes, as well as tsunamis due to its lengthy coastline. The country is located at the intersection of four tectonic plates: the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates, which contribute to active geological processes. A prominent transform fault spanning 1,400 kilometers traverses Myanmar, linking the Andaman spreading center to the Sagaing Fault zone in the north. The Sagaing Fault exacerbates the seismic risks for several populated areas including Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon, which collectively house nearly 46 percent of the country’s population.

Impact on Major Urban Areas

Despite Yangon being somewhat distanced from the actual fault trace, it remains at significant risk owing to its dense population. Historical seismic events underline this vulnerability; for instance, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck in Bago in 1903 also affected Yangon. The geological layout of Myanmar underscores its ongoing risk from seismic activity, necessitating continuous monitoring and preparedness for potential earthquakes.
