Details of the Incident

A 27-year-old man was shot dead outside his residence in the Anand Avenue area of Amritsar on the night of October 6, 2023, following a dispute regarding a parked Honda Activa scooter. The police have initiated a murder case against three brothers from the same locality, who were reportedly friends of the victim. The deceased, identified as Amit Sabharwal, was employed in marketing at a private firm.

The accused individuals have been named as Abhi Shah, Sunny Shah, and Ritik Shah. The Gate Hakima police are currently investigating the case and are examining CCTV footage from the vicinity to gather more evidence. Raids are underway to apprehend the suspects involved in the incident.

According to Amit’s father, the altercation that led to his son’s death stemmed from a disagreement over the scooter’s placement in the lane. Amit had returned home late after socialising with friends when the argument escalated with the accused. The father stated that his son had no known enemies and was “shot by his own friends.”

Details of the Shooting

The shooting occurred around 11:30 pm, during which six rounds were reportedly fired at Amit. The father recounted that two bullets struck Amit in the head, while one each hit his waist and leg. Family members inside the house initially mistook the sound of gunfire for firecrackers and rushed outside, only to find Amit lying in a pool of blood.

Emergency services were contacted, and Amit was taken to a hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries en route. The shocking nature of the incident has left the local community in disbelief, as it unfolded in a residential area.

In light of this tragic event, local BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu has publicly condemned the situation, attributing it to the perceived failures of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in maintaining law and order. He called for immediate accountability from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, urging the government to prioritise public safety.

Context of Recent Violence in Punjab

The murder of Amit Sabharwal is the latest in a series of violent incidents reported in Punjab, particularly in October. This follows the high-profile killing of Madhusudan ‘Mad’ Sandhu, a 29-year-old queer Punjabi makeup artist and social media influencer, who was shot dead on October 3 in broad daylight. Sandhu was attacked while waiting at a car wash near his salon, with the assailants reportedly tracking him before opening fire.

In the aftermath of Sandhu’s murder, a Facebook account associated with the ‘Goldy Dhillon gang’ claimed responsibility for the attack. Police in Gujarat later apprehended the alleged shooter, Parminder Kaka, along with several accomplices who had fled the state. The rising number of targeted killings in Punjab has sparked public outrage and intensified political debates regarding the state’s law-and-order situation.

Another notable case involved the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, who was shot dead inside a medical store during a live Facebook broadcast. This incident occurred after he confronted the store owner about the illegal sale of addictive substances. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has since taken over the investigation into this case, highlighting the ongoing challenges in addressing violence and crime in the region.
