Yuvraj Singh Recollects Advising Young Bumrah to Halt Bowling in Nets

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh shared an anecdote from 2013, reflecting on a net session where he advised a teenage Jasprit Bumrah, then only 16 years old, to stop bowling. This incident occurred during Yuvraj’s attempt to return to cricket after battling cancer. In a recent interview Yuvraj recounted the moment, emphasizing Bumrah’s impressive pace and aggressive bowling style at such a young age.

Bumrah’s Early Bowling Style

During the interview, Yuvraj remarked on the sheer speed at which Bumrah bowled, recalling, “I felt like saying, ‘I want this kid out of the nets, stop bowling to me.’ His delivery was lethal.” He noted that although Bumrah’s skills were still developing, his raw speed was evident, and he utilized a long run-up that contributed to his effectiveness on the pitch. The all-rounder described Bumrah’s unique bowling action, which often resulted in uncomfortable deliveries for batsmen.

Bumrah’s Growth into a World-Class Bowler

Yuvraj acknowledged Bumrah’s transformation over the years, emphasizing the pacer’s rise to prominence in international cricket. “He has evolved into one of the most feared bowlers in the modern game,” Yuvraj stated. He pointed out that batters are generally hesitant to attack Bumrah, opting instead to rotate the strike with other bowlers. Furthermore, Yuvraj highlighted Bumrah’s intelligence and skill, particularly in how his deceptive bowling action complicates matters for opposing players.

Bumrah’s Recent Performances

Jasprit Bumrah’s contribution to Indian cricket has only gained significance over time. Most recently, he showcased his prowess during a major tournament that concluded with India lifting the T20 World Cup trophy on March 8. Throughout the tournament, Bumrah played a crucial role, including a standout performance in the Super 8 match against the West Indies, where he took two important wickets, including that of Shimron Hetmyer, who had been in good form.

Key Moments in Knockout Stages

In the semi-final clash against England, Bumrah’s bowling stood out amidst high-scoring action. His economical overs were instrumental in reducing the opposition’s scoring rate, with figures of 4 overs, 33 runs, and 1 wicket gained, which contributed to India winning by a narrow margin of seven runs. The finale against New Zealand was another highlight for Bumrah, as he grabbed four wickets for only 15 runs in four overs and was named Player of the Match for his stellar performance.

Current Participation in Indian Premier League

Presently, Bumrah is actively participating in the 2026 Indian Premier League, representing the Mumbai Indians, who have claimed the championship title five times. His continuing evolution and contributions to the team have made him a pivotal player in the ongoing season.
