The CSR Journal Magazine

Nepal’s Home Minister, Sudhan Gurung, is scheduled to travel to New Delhi next week to participate in the BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ meeting. This trip marks Gurung’s first international visit since taking office. The invitation for his attendance was reportedly extended to Nepal through the Indian Foreign Ministry last week.

According to officials from both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nepal, Minister Gurung will depart for Delhi on October 12. The Home Ministers’ meeting is set to occur on October 13. This meeting will gather the Home Ministers of all BIMSTEC member nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

This gathering is significant as it represents the inaugural meeting of the Home Ministers from the BIMSTEC nations since the initiative was established in 1997. The discussions will aim to enhance collaboration among the nations in areas related to security and law enforcement.

Significance of the BIMSTEC Meeting

During the Fourth BIMSTEC Summit held in Kathmandu in 2018, an agreement was made among the leaders to organise a meeting at the level of Home Ministers. The leaders expressed the need for improved cooperation and coordination to tackle various security challenges in the region. The upcoming meeting will serve as a platform for addressing issues such as counter-terrorism and transnational crime.

It has been highlighted that the meeting will focus on strengthening collaboration between law enforcement and intelligence agencies across the member countries. This coordination is seen as crucial in addressing security threats that transcend national borders within the region.

Reports indicate that, aside from the formal discussions, Minister Gurung is expected to meet with his Indian counterpart on the sidelines of the conference. Such meetings have the potential to foster bilateral relations and address bilateral security concerns.

Future Implications for Nepal-India Relations

The visit by Nepal’s Home Minister is anticipated to have implications not only for BIMSTEC collaboration but also for Nepal-India relations. Strengthening ties through discussions on security cooperation may lead to enhanced diplomatic relations and pave the way for future collaborations in various sectors.

The BIMSTEC framework has laid the foundation for multi-sectoral cooperation among its member nations; thus, Minister Gurung’s attendance is viewed as an important step in promoting regional stability. The discussions will potentially shape future security policies in the member nations.

As the situation in the region continues to evolve, the meeting will highlight the importance of collective efforts in addressing common security challenges. Minister Gurung’s participation is seen as a commitment to pursuing collaborative approaches to uphold regional peace and security.
