Woman Who Empowered 1,000+ Deaf Women with Leadership & Financial Independence

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kritika Dhunde has transformed her life and the lives of many others through her determination and resilience. Initially rejected in job interviews due to communication barriers, Kritika now leads a network of over 1,000 deaf women across India. These women are gaining financial independence and stepping into leadership roles, which was a distant dream not too long ago.

Challenges Faced Growing Up

Raised in Nagpur, Kritika faced significant challenges as a deaf person in a world primarily created for hearing individuals. Completing her schooling in February 2007, she navigated a system lacking in resources for the deaf community.

Kritika recounts, “School often felt isolating because most teachers and students did not understand sign language, making lessons difficult to follow.” Yet, these obstacles instilled resilience and patience in her, shaping her determination to create opportunities for herself and others.

The Role of Family Support

Throughout her life, Kritika’s family has been a solid source of encouragement. She notes, “My family has always supported me and my parents played a crucial role in building my confidence.” This unwavering support laid the foundation for her desire to achieve independence. Now married and a mother of two, her journey toward financial stability has had a positive effect on her family dynamics, allowing her to contribute towards her daughters’ education and personal expenses.

Navigating Job Market Obstacles

Upon entering the job market in 2023, Kritika encountered numerous challenges, particularly with communication. Many interviewers struggled to accommodate her hearing disability, leading to premature endings of interviews. Expressing her frustration, she mentions, “The communication gap was often misinterpreted as a lack of ability. My skills were never the issue; it was about access.” This experience prompted her to seek alternative avenues for professional growth.

Finding Community and Adaptability

Through her online search, Kritika discovered a women-led entrepreneurial network associated with Oriflame, founded by Deepika Bhatia, in 2023. Initially, she relied heavily on live captions to keep up with discussions. The adaptability shown by other members, including introducing interpreters and basic sign language training, enhanced her participation significantly. “Communication became smoother, fostering a more inclusive environment,” Kritika reflects.

Transition to Leadership

As she became more at ease within the network, Kritika took on the role of mentor for other deaf women navigating similar challenges. Her leadership has encouraged many others to achieve their potential, creating a supportive environment that fosters growth. Today, Kritika leads a growing community of over 1,000 deaf women, empowering them through shared experiences and collaborative efforts.

Financial Independence and Growth

Within this framework, members earn income through product sales and various training opportunities. Kritika highlights that earning potential can reach up to Rs 70,000 per month for some women, positively impacting their households and aspirations for financial independence. This newfound economic stability has granted many a sense of dignity and self-worth.

Leveraging Social Media for Awareness

In 2024, Kritika began posting videos in sign language on Instagram to share her stories and connect with a broader audience. She views her digital presence as a way to express her identity and educate others about sign language. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many deaf women expressing that her content makes them feel understood, while some hearing individuals report gaining new insights into sign language.

Redefining Perceptions of Communication

Kritika’s advocacy aims to challenge existing misconceptions about deafness and communication. She believes that sign language is a rich, expressive form of communication that deserves recognition. Her visibility is slowly changing how society perceives those with hearing disabilities, highlighting that effective communication extends beyond spoken words.

A Broader Message for Change

For Kritika Dhunde, financial independence has not only transformed her life but also the way others perceive her abilities. She emphasizes that many differently-abled individuals possess immense talent and ambition but lack access and opportunity. Her message resonates with young deaf women, affirming that their dreams and capabilities are valid, encouraging them to carve their paths in the world.
