Who is Shakti Dubey, a Girl from Varanasi who Tops the UPSC Exam?

Shakti Dubey, a resident of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as the All India Rank 1 (AIR 1) in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024. This marks a significant achievement, as it is the first time the top two positions have been secured by female candidates, with Harshita Goyal securing AIR 2. ​

Dubey, who completed her B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Allahabad and her M.Sc. from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), began her UPSC preparation in 2018. Despite her science background, she opted for Political Science and International Relations as her optional subjects, demonstrating her versatility and commitment to public service. ​

In a mock interview, Dubey shared that her inspiration to join the civil services stemmed from observing her father’s work in the police service. She realized the impact of public service on community safety and well-being, which motivated her to pursue this path.​

The UPSC CSE 2024 results also saw Dongre Archit Parag securing AIR 3, Shah Margi Chirag at AIR 4, and Aakash Garg at AIR 5. A total of 1,009 candidates have been recommended for appointment across various civil services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Group A and B services. ​

Women Shine in UPSC 2024: 11 Among Top 25

This year’s results highlight the growing representation of women in the civil services, with 11 women among the top 25 candidates. The diversity in educational backgrounds and optional subjects among the top scorers reflects the inclusive nature of the examination process. ​
