Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Thursday, October 1. The programme, scheduled for 11 am, marks 100 years since the establishment of the country’s first Public Service Commission in 1926.

During the event, Modi will release a UPSC Centenary Commemorative Coin, a commemorative postage stamp and a book titled ‘100 Landmark Judgements- Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India’. The celebrations are being attended by UPSC officials, members of State Public Service Commissions, senior government officers and academicians.

Two-Day Centenary Programme

The centenary programme began on September 30 at Bharat Mandapam with ‘Shatabdi Samaroh – Manthan’. The first day featured addresses by eminent speakers and panel discussions focusing on public service, recruitment and the evolving role of civil services.

The October 1 event marks the culmination of year-long celebrations that began on October 1, 2025, when the UPSC started its centenary year. The Commission’s own records show that its 99th Foundation Day celebrations in 2025 marked the beginning of the centenary year.

UPSC’s 100-Year Journey

The Union Public Service Commission was established on October 1, 1926, and subsequently became a constitutional body under the Constitution of India. Over the decades, it has remained the central institution responsible for recruiting officers for several key services of the Union government.

The Commission conducts examinations for a range of services, including the Civil Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination and Central Armed Police Forces examination.

Focus On Future-Ready Public Service

The centenary discussions have also focused on how recruitment and public administration need to evolve with changing governance requirements. On the first day of the celebrations, UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar outlined the Commission’s vision for its next phase around the principles of trust, transparency and technology.

The centenary event brings together stakeholders from across the country, including representatives of State Public Service Commissions, government officials, academicians and UPSC personnel, as the institution marks a century of its role in public service recruitment.
