“We are being defamed”: Man Protesting in Khandwa Against Misuse of Stray Dog Sterilisation Funds

The CSR Journal Magazine

A man donned a dog mask as part of a symbolic protest at the Khandwa Collectorate, asserting that funds designated for the sterilisation of stray dogs had been misappropriated. The demonstration took place on August 19, during a weekly public grievance hearing, where the individual lodged a formal complaint against the Khandwa Municipal Corporation.

Accompanying him was Mullu Rathore, the Leader of Opposition for the Khandwa Municipal Corporation, who openly supported the protest aimed at drawing attention to the increasing stray dog population in the city. The man explained that his unconventional choice of a dog mask was intended to highlight the ongoing issues related to the municipal body’s sterilisation programme.

He expressed his concern, stating, “I did this for justice. We are being defamed, but the real fault lies with the Nagar Nigam. They are committing corruption in our name, corruption in the name of sterilising us.” His statements underscored the frustration felt by the community regarding the handling of the situation.

Charges of Corruption in the Sterilisation Programme

The protester further alleged that while the municipal corporation had received funding for the sterilisation of stray dogs, the actual procedures had not taken place. This failure, he claimed, had directly contributed to a burgeoning stray dog population. “They received funds in the name of sterilising us but no sterilisation was done, leading to an increase in our population,” he explained.

According to the protester, the heightened presence of stray dogs had caused concern among residents, resulting in a negative perception of the animals. “People feel that we bite them, but we are not at fault,” he stated, emphasising the disconnect between public perception and the reality of the situation.

Amidst these claims, the man also addressed the difficulties faced by stray dogs, particularly regarding their access to food. He pointed out that a decline in available food sources has compelled many dogs to approach people in search of sustenance, leading to encounters where they may appear aggressive. “We used to get something to eat, but that doesn’t happen anymore. So, we will obviously chase after people,” he noted.

Call for District Administration Investigation

He expressed optimism that his unusual demonstration would attract significant attention and lead to a response from authorities. “I know I went viral. I am confident that I will get justice,” he remarked, indicating a belief that the visibility of the protest would facilitate action on his complaint.

The event has highlighted broader issues surrounding the management of Khandwa’s stray dog population and the effectiveness of the municipal corporation’s sterilisation programme. As authorities move forward, the situation remains under scrutiny amid calls for accountability and improved animal welfare initiatives.
