Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal inaugurated a major extension of the Indore Metro on Thursday, marking a significant step in upgrading the transport infrastructure of the Malwa region. Developed by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited at a cost of Rs 2,850 crore, the newly opened corridor connects Super Corridor-3 to Malviya Nagar, bringing the rapid transit system deeper into the city.

The inauguration signals the beginning of a broader transport strategy for the state, with officials announcing long-term plans to extend the metro network to neighbouring industrial and religious hubs, including Ujjain, Pithampur, Dewas, and Mhow. State and central leaders at the event emphasised that the project aims to decentralise urban growth and ease commuting for residents, students, and traders across the wider metropolitan area.

Route Details And Underground Expansion

The operationalised corridor stretches 17 kilometres from Gandhinagar to Malviya Square and encompasses 16 stations. According to Union Minister Manohar Lal, the metro was previously limited to an approximate 6-kilometre stretch on the city’s outskirts, but the addition of this new 11-kilometre segment successfully links it to major urban centres.

Addressing aesthetic and spatial concerns within the city, Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced that certain central stretches of the metro would be constructed underground. He noted that installing elevated metro pillars along significant thoroughfares like MG Road could have compromised the city’s visual appeal.

While acknowledging that the underground construction would lead to a budget increase, Vijayvargiya stated that the adjustment was necessary to preserve Indore’s identity and beauty. He added that metro construction across the region will likely continue for the next 10 to 15 years as it expands towards Avantikapuri and Maksi.

Boosting Regional And National Connectivity

Beyond intra-city transit, the leadership highlighted major railway developments poised to transform regional logistics. Chief Minister Yadav pointed to the recently approved Rs 18,500-crore Indore-Manmad railway line as a landmark achievement that will establish direct rail connectivity between Indore and Mumbai via Maharashtra, eliminating the need to route traffic through Gujarat.

Yadav stated that his government will systematically develop a better rail connectivity from Guna to Ujjain, Ujjain to Indore, and Indore to Manmad in the coming years. He emphasised that the metro expansion into Ujjain will play a crucial role in integrating the wider metropolitan region.

Several prominent public representatives attended the ceremony, including Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat, Indore MP Shankar Lalwani, and Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava, alongside local MLAs Golu Shukla, Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, Madhu Verma, and Usha Thakur. Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Dubey proposed the vote of thanks after the guests formally launched the service.

Economic Growth And Infrastructure Milestones

Framing the local developments within a national context, Chief Minister Yadav highlighted India’s robust economic performance. He noted that India’s growth rate of 7.8 per cent, compared to approximately 2 per cent in the United States and 4 per cent in China, reflects the country’s strong global economic standing and growing confidence under the central government.

Echoing this sentiment, Union Minister Manohar Lal detailed the rapid expansion of India’s transit infrastructure. He stated that in 2014, metro services operated across just 245 kilometres in five cities, whereas the country is now on track to establish a network of around 1,170 kilometres spanning 26 cities.

The Union Minister suggested that India could soon overtake the United States to become the country with the world’s second-largest metro network. Describing Madhya Pradesh as the heart of the country and Indore as its heartbeat, he asserted that rapid progress in urbanisation and infrastructure is essential to building a developed India by 2047.
