Vinesh Phogat Labels Brij Bhushan A Criminal and Plans Supreme Court Appeal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has publicly condemned former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, characterising him as a “goon and a criminal.” Phogat made these statements on August 18, 2026, while engaging with reporters in Jind, amidst a political event. Her remarks follow a recent court decision in Delhi where Singh was acquitted in a high-profile sexual harassment case involving female wrestlers. The accusations have not only affected Singh’s reputation but also sparked ongoing legal disputes.

In an emphatic tone, Phogat questioned the respect accorded to Singh, saying, “Who is Brij Bhushan? Forget about him.” She highlighted concerns regarding Singh’s alleged encroachment on land and inquired about the sources of his financial wealth. The Asian Games gold medallist expressed determination to carry on the fight in the Supreme Court, stating her intention to pursue justice for the complainants.

Ongoing Legal Developments

The remarks made by Phogat come against the backdrop of a protracted legal struggle that began earlier in 2023. Prominent female wrestlers, including Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, had publicly accused Singh of sexual harassment, which led to a massive protest and subsequent Supreme Court action. Following these events, Delhi Police filed an FIR, and a chargesheet was later presented against Singh.

In May 2024, a Rouse Avenue Court found adequate evidence to proceed with charges against Singh regarding allegations of sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women. Additional charges of criminal intimidation related to two wrestlers were also established. Nevertheless, Singh maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, denying the allegations against him.

On August 3, 2026, Singh was acquitted of all charges, along with former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar. The court reportedly stated that the prosecution did not meet the burden of proof required to sustain the charges and described the allegations as politically motivated, suggesting they appeared to be fabricated. This ruling has left the complainants dissatisfied.

Future Actions by Phogat and Fellow Complainants

Despite the court’s ruling, Phogat and the other athletes have expressed their intention to contest the verdict, seeking justice through higher judicial avenues. The events surrounding this controversy have attracted significant attention, remaining one of the most talked-about topics in Indian sports. The protests in 2023 spurred increased scrutiny of the WFI and its governance of wrestling in the country.

Following the conclusion of his term in 2024, Singh was removed from his position as WFI chief. Throughout these proceedings, he has steadfastly denied all allegations, asserting that the claims against him are unfounded. The case continues to unfold, with implications for the future of wrestling management and the treatment of women athletes in India.

Vinesh Phogat’s statements reflect the ongoing sentiment among the complainants to seek justice and accountability through established legal frameworks. As the saga evolves, it remains to be seen how the legal journey will progress, particularly in the Supreme Court, where Phogat aims to uphold the claims made by herself and her fellow wrestlers.
