Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Muthu Alias Kaattaan’ Delivers Intriguing Mystery but Falters on Pacing

The CSR Journal Magazine

‘Muthu Alias Kaattaan’, featuring Vijay Sethupathi, opens with a gripping scene that sets a dramatic tone for the series. Within the first few minutes of the premiere episode, a villager stumbles upon a severed head resting prominently on a rock, devoid of any accompanying body. This startling introduction paves the way for what appears to be a captivating mystery. The series, which spans over ten episodes on JioHotstar, embarks on an investigative journey. However, it raises the question of whether it can live up to these initial expectations.

A Police Station in Peril

Set against the backdrop of a local police station grappling with a dwindling case load, the narrative features officer Kalai Pandiyan, portrayed by Vadivel Murugan. His opportunity arises when he receives a report about the dismembered head, prompting him to persuade his superiors to act on it. An elder from the community, played by Balaji Sakthivel, identifies the deceased as Muthu, leading to the exploration of the case.

An Enigmatic Character

As the investigation unfolds, Sub-inspector Siddharthan, portrayed by Muthukumar, along with his associate Thangamudi, played by Singampuli, begin to unveil an intriguing portrait of Muthu. Throughout his life, Muthu’s diverse roles include being a member of a dance troupe, an orphanage manager, a watch mechanic, a mahout, and even a goat dung seller. Additionally, he is depicted as a generous individual, sharing his wealth with those in need. The series gradually shifts focus to Muthu’s complicated relationships with characters like Sivendra, played by Milind Soman, and his adversary, portrayed by Sudev Nair, as they try to decode his mysterious background and the motives behind his murder.

Ambition vs. Execution

On paper, Muthu Alias Kaattaan offers a rich canvas for a multi-layered mystery filled with subplots. Creators M Manikandan and B Ajithkumar seem to have aimed for a profound narrative. Nonetheless, there emerges a disconnect between ambition and its realization. The series takes considerable time to establish its story, and the slow pacing may not engage all viewers effectively. Necessary elements could have been streamlined or eliminated entirely without compromising the essence of the plot, as seen in the domestic dynamics of Kalai Pandiyan, which distract from the central investigation.

Middle Episodes and Character Dynamics

While the middle episodes pick up pace, they still struggle to differentiate themselves meaningfully. Muthu and Sivendra frequently urge their associates to place blind trust in their decisions, yet the narrative fails to provide solid reasons for the audience to share that trust. Although the theme of morality is prominent, the show tends to absolve its characters through justifications that feel unwarranted, leading to a moral ambiguity that lacks depth.

Complex, Yet Convoluted Storytelling

The non-linear storytelling contributes to added complexity, tracing different periods in Muthu’s life to unveil various aspects of his character. Unfortunately, what could have been a streamlined investigative drama often becomes overly intricate, burdened by narrative conveniences. Vijay Sethupathi’s portrayal of Muthu is marked by restraint, though it does not consistently resonate with the emotional depth intended. His relationships, particularly with women, hold significant potential but are often curtailed, leaving little room for meaningful development.

Supporting Cast and Overall Impact

The performances of Vadivel Murugan, Muthukumar, and Singampuli provide a sturdy backbone to the investigative plot, navigating through Tamil Nadu into parts of Kerala. Milind Soman and Sudev Nair contribute effectively in their limited appearances but are not sufficiently utilized. Despite having promising elements, Muthu Alias Kaattaan ultimately struggles to harness its full potential, showcasing a narrative that fails to deliver on its intriguing premise.
