Uttarakhand Woman Gives Birth on Hospital Floor After Denial of Care, Nurse Asks Maza Aaya?

The CSR Journal Magazine

A shocking incident from Haridwar has triggered statewide outrage after a pregnant woman allegedly denied admission and care. This forced her to deliver the baby on the floor of the Government Women’s Hospital. The event, which occurred between the night of September 28 and the early hours of September 29, was captured on video and has since gone viral, sparking protests and swift administrative action.

Woman Denied Admission, Gives Birth on Floor

According to the woman’s family, she was in severe labor when they reached the Haridwar Women’s Hospital. However, hospital staff allegedly refused to admit her. The on-duty doctor reportedly told the family that deliveries were not conducted there. As her condition worsened, the woman collapsed and gave birth on the hospital floor without any medical assistance.

Soni, a relative who arrived the next morning, said the woman wasn’t even allowed to lie on a bed. “When we arrived at the hospital in the morning she [the pregnant woman and another relative] told us that no one even allowed her to lie on a bed.”

According to Soni, after the delivery, one of the two nurses standing there sarcastically said, “Mazaa aaya? Aur bacha paida karegi?” [Did you enjoy it? Do you want to deliver more kids?] reported, India Today.

“Who says such things? If something had happened to the baby, who would have taken responsibility? The delivery took place on the floor. We demand that no patient be treated like this. People come here in sorrow, not in joy,” Soni said.

Hospital Staff Face Action; Inquiry Underway

Following a preliminary probe, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. R.K. Singh confirmed the suspension of Dr. Sonali, a contractual night-duty doctor, and issued notices to two nurses. While the CMO initially suggested the woman had been admitted and termed the incident a “conspiracy,” he has assured a thorough investigation.

Chief Medical Officer Dr RK Singh said, “I have taken a preliminary report from the Women’s Hospital and am awaiting a detailed written version. According to initial information, the woman was brought in around 9:30 pm and delivered at 1:30 am in the emergency room. The authenticity of the video is still being verified. However, if any negligence is confirmed, strict action will be taken.”

Political and Social Fallout

The State Women’s Commission took suo motu cognizance of the incident. Chairperson Kusum Kandwal condemned the treatment meted out to the woman and emphasized the need for accountability despite the availability of government-provided healthcare facilities.

Meanwhile, political tensions escalated as Congress party leaders staged a Gandhian-style protest. Led by former councilor Ashok Sharma, protestors garlanded hospital officials sarcastically and sat in dharna outside the office, later burning effigies of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat. They demanded stricter action and improvements in the public health system.

Healthcare Under Scrutiny

This incident is not isolated. Reports of negligence have been surfacing from across Uttarakhand, especially from remote areas. Just days ago, the death of a child in Bageshwar under similar circumstances added to concerns. Despite repeated promises, public healthcare in the state remains in a critical condition, understaffed, underfunded, and overwhelmed.
