US Arrests James Cody Bryant for Alleged Role in Canadian Shooting

The CSR Journal Magazine

The US has arrested a 30-year-old named James Cody Bryant from Bellingham, Washington, for allegedly encouraging an individual to execute one of the most devastating school shootings in Canadian history. Authorities have charged Bryant with one count of conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, a charge described as “novel” for this type of case. A court appearance is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday.

This arrest follows a lengthy investigation into the tragic events of February, where a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including five children aged 12 and 13, as well as an educational assistant. Bryant reportedly had communications with Jesse Van Rootselaar, the 18-year-old accused shooter, for at least six months prior to the incident.

According to the US attorney’s office in Seattle, Bryant allegedly provided advice for executing the school attack while expressing willingness to livestream the event. Investigators assert that Bryant failed to report Van Rootselaar’s intentions to law enforcement, jeopardising public safety.

Communication and Tactical Advice Provided

Documents related to the case reveal that Bryant communicated with Van Rootselaar through the Discord platform, sharing tactical advice on the logistics of carrying out the attack. Allegedly, Bryant noted the importance of hallways, corners, and open spaces to maximise the impact of the attack. They also exchanged information about escape routes within the school environment.

Reports indicate that Bryant sent funds to assist in purchasing a lighter intended for use in creating an explosive device, and offered guidance on maintaining secrecy, such as instructing Van Rootselaar to delete messages and use virtual private networks. While there were moments where Bryant attempted to dissuade Van Rootselaar from committing the attack, the support provided ultimately overshadowed these efforts.

The events in Tumbler Ridge unfolded with Van Rootselaar reportedly first killing her mother and stepbrother at home. Following this, the individual attacked the nearby school, leading to widespread devastation in the community.

Reactions from Officials and Ongoing Investigations

Bob Zimmer, a federal lawmaker representing Tumbler Ridge, emphasised the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He stated that the victims and their families deserve clear answers regarding the alleged involvement of Bryant in coaching the shooter throughout the plot.

In addition to the legal proceedings concerning Bryant, families of the victims are pursuing a lawsuit against OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot. They allege that the AI company failed to alert law enforcement regarding alarming interactions the shooter had with the chatbot, adding another layer to the ongoing investigations surrounding the tragic event.
