Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has given the green light for a procurement plan worth ₹5,547.99 crore at Minimum Support Price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for the Kharif Marketing Season 2026-27. This initiative is targeted at farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, with aims to shield them from falling market prices and guarantee adequate returns for their harvests, notably in the pulse and oilseed sectors.

Chouhan emphasised that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, enhancing farmers’ welfare and self-reliance in agriculture remains a significant focus for the government. He highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure farmers obtain fair prices for their crops while striving to make procurement processes more transparent and accessible.

State-Specific Allocations and Details

In Uttar Pradesh, the largest portion of the approved budget, totalling ₹3,992.57 crore, has been allocated for procurement activities. This includes the purchase of 4,66,000 metric tonnes of tur valued at ₹3,937.70 crore and 6,250 metric tonnes of moong worth ₹54.87 crore, all at MSP. This significant investment is expected to bolster the income of the farmers in the state significantly.

Karnataka has also received substantial support, with approvals amounting to ₹1,107 crore under the PSS. This allocation encompasses the procurement of 1,15,500 metric tonnes of soybean valued at ₹659.27 crore, 38,250 metric tonnes of moong worth ₹335.83 crore, and 13,413 metric tonnes of sunflower priced at ₹111.90 crore. These measures are anticipated to aid in stabilising the agricultural market in the region.

Telangana’s farmers will benefit from allocated procurement funds amounting to ₹448.42 crore. This includes the purchase of 62,000 metric tonnes of soybean valued at ₹353.90 crore and 10,766 metric tonnes of moong worth ₹94.52 crore, all under the PSS at MSP. This initiative is designed to enhance the economic security of farmers throughout the state.

Government Commitment to Farmers’ Welfare

Chouhan reiterated that this procurement decision is part of broader efforts to ensure greater economic stability for farmers and to foster the domestic production of pulses and oilseeds. He also mentioned that these initiatives contribute towards India’s larger goals of self-sufficiency in pulses and edible oils.

To ensure the smooth operation of this scheme, the Minister assured that procurement arrangements at designated centres will be transparent. Farmers can expect timely payment for their produce directly deposited into their bank accounts. This measure aims to alleviate financial uncertainties farmers often encounter during market fluctuations.

The initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing the needs of agricultural communities, ensuring that farmers are not only protected against adverse market conditions but also encouraged to maximise their production capabilities. The transparent mechanisms proposed are integral in building trust within the farming sector.
