On February 19, during a White House gathering commemorating Black History Month, President Donald Trump paid tribute to Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, a prominent civil rights activist. Jackson, who was 84 years old, passed away on February 17. Trump expressed his condolences and reflected on Jackson’s significant contributions to civil rights and his close relationship with the Reverend, describing him as “a real hero.”

In his address at the reception, Trump acknowledged the vital role played by African Americans in the United States’ independence movement. He stated that nearly 10,000 African Americans fought for the patriot cause during the Revolutionary War, helping to secure the nation’s freedom. The President emphasized the longstanding tradition of service among Black Americans, asserting that they have consistently stepped forward to defend the flag and the country throughout history.

Rev. Jackson’s Legacy and Initiatives

Reverend Jesse Jackson was known for his dedication to civil rights and social justice. Working closely with Martin Luther King Jr., he played a key role in various movements advocating for equality. Following the assassination of King, Jackson founded the Rainbow Coalition, which sought to unite diverse racial groups and advocate for their rights. He also established the civil rights organization Operation PUSH, which aimed to empower African Americans, particularly in Chicago.

Presidential Medal of Freedom Announcement

During the same event, President Trump announced that former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Ben Carson, would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The President characterized the Medal of Freedom as the highest honor one can achieve outside of the Congressional Medal of Honor. He remarked that many who receive the Congressional Medal of Honor are posthumously recognized, making the Presidential Medal of Freedom particularly significant.
