Trump Again Claims Role in India-Pakistan Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Global Conflicts

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a cabinet briefing on March 26, US President Donald Trump reiterated his assertion that he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, describing both nations as “nuclear nations.” Trump claimed that his intervention during what he termed Operation Sindoor helped resolve conflicts that have persisted for over thirty years. His statement comes as tensions in other regions, particularly between Israel and Iran, have disrupted energy supplies.

In his remarks, Trump stated, “I solved the other ones (conflicts between countries) in one day that had been going for 32 years. We stopped one that was starting. It was already started. India and Pakistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan said that I solved something that was going to cost 10 million lives. That was going to cost a lot of lives. Those were complicated, but we got them done quickly.” He emphasized that his motivation is to prevent loss of life.

This is not the first time Trump has claimed credit for the ceasefire; since he announced on social media on May 10 that there was a “full and immediate” ceasefire between India and Pakistan, he has mentioned it on over 80 occasions, adding that he has “stopped eight wars” during his first year back in office.

Notably, during a “Board of Peace” event on February 20, Trump again asserted his role in mediating between the two countries during Operation Sindoor. He mentioned that he had threatened to impose “200 percent tariffs” on the two nations as a means of economic deterrent against further conflict.

However, India’s official position contrasts with Trump’s claims regarding the ceasefire. The Indian government asserts that the cessation of hostilities occurred following a communication from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to their Indian counterpart. This came after India’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
