INDIA bloc ally Trinamool Congress refuses to sign No-confidence motion notice against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

The CSR Journal Magazine

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee stated on Tuesday that his party is open to signing a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. However, he emphasized that the opposition should first present its concerns to the Speaker, which include the suspension of eight Congress MPs.

While the Congress and other INDIA bloc parties moved a no-confidence motion, the TMC suggested providing the Chair time to reconsider, aiming for a more strategic approach rather than immediate, “muscle-flexing” action.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, Banerjee mentioned that the Speaker deserves an opportunity to address these grievances before any motion seeking his removal is introduced.

TMC’s Position on the Motion

Banerjee clarified that while the TMC is willing to support the no-confidence motion, they want unity among all opposition parties within the INDIA bloc to send a letter to the Speaker first. This letter would outline the four key points that form the basis of their grievances. He indicated that should the Speaker not respond satisfactorily within a period of two to three days, the opposition would then consider moving forward with the no-confidence motion.

Details of the Opposition’s Complaints

Earlier in the day, opposition parties, including Congress, the Samajwadi Party, and the DMK, filed a notice with the Lok Sabha secretary general, alleging that Speaker Om Birla has displayed “blatantly partisan” behavior. The notice was submitted by Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, K. Suresh, and Mohamed Jawed. Banerjee criticized the Speaker’s role in recent adjournments, questioning the functioning of the Parliament. He remarked that while the TMC desires a productive session in the House, it seems that the Union government does not share that objective. He further expressed that the Speaker also bears responsibility for ensuring smooth parliamentary proceedings.

Gathering Support from Other Parties

According to sources, approximately 120 Members of Parliament from various parties, including Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), have signed the notice in a show of solidarity against the Speaker. This widespread support points to a growing discontent among the opposition regarding the conduct of the Lok Sabha proceedings.

Future of the No-confidence Motion

While discussions continue, it remains to be seen whether the TMC and other opposition members will follow through on their plan to advance the no-confidence motion. It appears that TMC’s strategy hinges on the response from the Speaker and the collective action of the INDIA bloc partners. If the issues are adequately addressed, the opposition may take a more united approach in pursuing their demands and ensuring accountability within the parliamentary framework.
