Trinamool Congress MLA Kanchan Mullick Accused of Threatening Doctor at Kolkata Hospital

Bengali film actor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Uttarpara, Kanchan Mullick, is facing serious allegations of threatening a doctor and engaging in unruly behavior at the School of Tropical Medicine in Kolkata. The accusations stem from an incident where Mullick, accompanied by his wife Sreemoyee Chattaraj, allegedly threatened to cancel the registration of a duty doctor while seeking treatment for a relative.

The Incident Unfolds

According to sources, on Thursday morning, Kanchan Mullick and his wife brought his wife’s 86-year-old grandmother, a resident of Asansol suffering from a skin condition, to the School of Tropical Medicine. Despite the outpatient department (OPD) for dermatology not being open, a skin specialist reportedly advised them to consult a general medicine doctor.

When they arrived at the medicine department, there was a considerable crowd of patients. However, the duty doctor, Dr. Mehbubar Rahman, who is also the Head of the Department at the School of Tropical Medicine, reportedly attended to Mullick’s relative first, acknowledging the MLA’s identity.

Escalation of Confrontation

Sources indicate that after examining the elderly patient, the medicine doctor found nothing particularly alarming. Despite the busy OPD, Mullick and his wife allegedly began to repeatedly question the doctor about the patient’s condition, insisting on checking her blood pressure and repeatedly inquiring about necessary medications.

The continuous barrage of questions from the MLA and his wife amidst a crowded OPD reportedly caused the doctor to lose his temper. It’s alleged that Dr. Rahman then asked Mullick and his wife, “Are you MBBS doctors?”

Following this, Mullick and his wife are accused of threatening to cancel the doctor’s registration. The MLA was allegedly heard saying, “Tell me your registration number, I will cancel it.” Eyewitnesses, including other patients present, reportedly protested against the MLA’s behavior. After the exchange, Mullick and his wife promptly left the hospital. Dr. Rahman later stated, “I found his behavior very objectionable. I have reported everything in writing.”

Official Complaint Filed

Dr. Mehbubar Rahman has since filed a written complaint against Kanchan Mullick with the hospital authorities. The hospital, in turn, has forwarded the complaint to the Swasthya Bhawan (State Health Department headquarters).

Kanchan Mullick Denies Allegations

Kanchan Mullick has vehemently denied all allegations leveled against him. He, in turn, has accused Dr. Rahman of misbehaving with his wife. Mullick stated that the doctor told his wife within the OPD, “Are you a doctor? If you know everything, why have you come here for treatment?”

Mullick further claimed that due to the rain, there was no significant crowd at the hospital, and other patients did not protest against him. He asserted that the doctor initiated the misbehavior, leading to the verbal altercation. “If I were taking advantage of being an MLA, would I go to the OPD and get a ticket to see a doctor? It’s easy to point fingers at me because I am an MLA today,” Mullick added.
