5 Killed, Over 20 Injured in Uttarakhand Bus Accident; Rescue Operations Underway

The CSR Journal Magazine

A horrific bus accident in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district claimed five lives and left more than 20 passengers severely injured on Monday. The incident occurred when a bus carrying 28 passengers skidded off the road and plunged into a 70-meter-deep gorge near Kunjapuri-Hindolakhal in the Narendranagar area.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) quickly launched a rescue operation, evacuating the survivors and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.

Rescue Operation and Casualties

According to officials, the bus was traveling from outside Uttarakhand, carrying passengers from various states. The accident occurred around noon, when the vehicle veered off the road in the Narendranagar police station limits and fell into the deep gorge. At the time of the incident, the bus was initially reported to be carrying between 30 to 35 passengers, though further confirmation put the number at 28.

The SDRF was alerted soon after the crash and dispatched five rescue teams from their Dhalwala, Koti Colony, and Corps Headquarters posts. Upon reaching the site, the teams confirmed five fatalities at the scene, while the other passengers were safely evacuated. The injured, some in critical condition, were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention. The seriously injured passengers were referred to AIIMS Rishikesh for specialized care.

Ongoing Search and Investigation

Local authorities continue their search operations at the crash site, although all survivors have now been rescued. The identities of the victims are still being verified, and authorities are working to ascertain the cause of the accident. While initial reports suggest that the bus driver may have lost control, investigations are ongoing.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences for the victims, stating on social media that the loss of life was deeply heartbreaking. He assured that the district administration, along with the SDRF, was actively involved in the rescue efforts and that all injured individuals were receiving necessary treatment.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on X, “The news of the bus accident near Kunjapuri Temple in Narendra Nagar, Tehri, is extremely heartbreaking. I pray to God that the departed souls find a place at His divine feet and that the grieving families are granted the strength to endure this immense sorrow. The injured in the accident are being sent to the nearest hospital by the district administration and SDRF, and the seriously injured have been referred to AIIMS Rishikesh. In this regard, I am in constant contact with the local authorities.”

Previous Bus Accidents in the Region

This latest accident adds to a series of bus accidents that have occurred in Uttarakhand this year. In June, a similar incident took place when a bus fell into the Alaknanda River in Rudraprayag, resulting in two deaths and several missing passengers. The state has seen repeated accidents on its hilly roads, which are often prone to landslides and difficult driving conditions.

The authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution while navigating the region’s treacherous roads and have pledged to improve safety measures in response to the growing number of such incidents.
