Teenage Girl Killed in Rajasthan After Balcony Collapse at School Construction Site

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred on Independence Day in Pathar Padi village, a tribal-dominated area in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, when the balcony of an under-construction government school collapsed, leaving a 12-year-old girl dead and another minor injured. The accident took place in the morning while the two girls, identified as Moli and Payal, were either grazing goats or playing near the school construction site, according to varying local accounts.

Moli, a visitor to the village, died on the spot after being trapped under the debris, while Payal sustained injuries and was quickly taken to a hospital in neighbouring Gujarat for treatment. The news spread rapidly through the village, stirring anger among residents who soon alleged that poor quality construction materials were to blame for the collapse. Protests erupted at the scene, with villagers demanding strict action against those responsible for the shoddy work.

District and police officials arrived swiftly to bring the situation under control and to promise a thorough investigation into the incident. Bharat Adivasi Party leader and MP Rajkumar Roat expressed grief and called out authorities, lamenting the “corrupt system” that allowed such tragedies to occur even as the country marked 79 years of independence.

Officials from the Education Department clarified that the new school building, which was under construction, was not being used for classes. Ongoing educational activities were taking place safely in another building about a hundred metres away. Department representatives and the site’s overseeing engineers were questioned about the quality of construction, and a technical probe has begun to verify the villagers’ allegations.

This heartbreaking event follows a series of recent construction accidents at Rajasthan’s schools. Just last month, seven students died and over twenty others were injured after the roof of a school building in Jhalawar district gave way during class. These incidents have raised widespread concerns over school infrastructure safety in the state and prompted the education ministry to launch urgent inspections and surveys of government school buildings.
