Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran has stated that the recent tragedy in Karur reflects poorly on Chief Minister Vijay’s management of the situation. This comment follows the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court’s recent ruling, which invalidated government orders aimed at granting compassionate employment to the families of victims affected by the stampede. Nagendran highlighted that the events have now become a subject of judiciary scrutiny.

He expressed his views to reporters, stating, “The Karur incident is indeed tragic. The Chief Minister did not appropriately address the aftermath.” Nagendran emphasised the need to refrain from comments on ongoing legal proceedings, acknowledging that the matter is currently under judicial evaluation.

Court’s Decision on Employment Scheme

The High Court found that the Tamil Nadu government’s orders contravened Article 14 and Article 16 of the Indian Constitution, which pertain to equality and employment opportunities. This observation was part of a public interest litigation challenging the government’s latest decisions under the administration led by CM Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.

Advocate Cleetus, representing the petitioners, noted, “Today signifies a landmark victory, especially for young people in Tamil Nadu.” Cleetus added that the Supreme Court had previously provided specific directives related to compensation, which the state had to follow. He mentioned that the state government relied on past incidents to support its stance, but the court ultimately annulled the government order about employment related to the Karur incident.

Moreover, Advocate Mohammed Rashid elaborated on the legal questions raised regarding compassionate employment for the relatives of victims. He indicated that the court ruled in favour of the petitioners based on a Supreme Court judgement that outlined criteria for such appointments. Rashid stated, “The deceased from the Karur stampede do not meet the eligibility requirements under existing regulations.” He explained that the court acknowledged their submissions and set aside the government’s policies, asserting they were politically motivated and not consistent with legal standards.

Background of the Karur Incident

The deadly stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, during a rally led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief and actor Vijay, resulting in the loss of 41 lives and numerous injuries. Following this tragic event, CM Vijay visited Karur on July 10, 2023, to engage in various government and party activities, including the distribution of appointment orders for compassionate jobs to legal heirs of the victims.

This distribution was part of response measures taken after the incident, but the recent court ruling has now called into question the legality of such actions. The measures taken by the state government are being scrutinised for their adherence to the principles of justice and equality as stipulated by the Indian Constitution.
