Surya Ganguli Highlights Role of Indian-Origin Scientists in US, India’s AI Potential

The CSR Journal Magazine

Surya Ganguli, an Associate Professor in Applied Physics and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute, has highlighted the significant contributions of Indian-origin computer scientists in the United States. In a recent discussion, he expressed his belief that many of the leading figures in the field of computer science in the US are from India. Ganguli, who himself was born in India and now resides in the US, emphasized the wealth of technical talent that India has exported globally.

Ganguli conveyed a sense of optimism regarding India’s potential to retain and nurture its talent, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). He noted the remarkable enthusiasm and capabilities of young professionals in India, pointing out that the country is now in a strong position to develop its own sovereign AI solutions. His comments suggest a positive outlook on the future of technological innovation within the nation.

During the conversation, Ganguli touched on the necessity of regulation in AI, particularly for specific applications. He cautioned that while regulation can play a crucial role, overly stringent rules at the early stages of innovation could stifle creativity and progress. He argued for a careful balance, asserting that sensible regulation is essential without imposing overly burdensome restrictions that might hinder groundbreaking advancements.

Further elaborating on the relationship between regulation and scientific progress, Ganguli stated that science should strive for reliability. He mentioned that with advancements in verification systems, certain fields such as coding, mathematics, and even physics can achieve reliable outcomes. However, he acknowledged that other areas like law and social interactions may not possess the same level of verifiability, and therefore should be approached with caution on a case-by-case basis.

The remarks from Ganguli coincided with the ongoing India AI Impact Summit 2026, being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The summit commenced on February 16 and is set to conclude on February 20, 2026. It gathers policymakers, industry experts, academic leaders, technology innovators, and civil society representatives from around the world, aiming to foster productive discussions on artificial intelligence and its implications for the future.
