Sonam Wangchuk’s health is currently stable, according to Safdarjung Hospital. However, he remains under strict medical supervision due to complications arising from an extended fasting period and ongoing laboratory irregularities.

Dr Manisha Thakur, the Head of the Department of Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital, provided updates during a press briefing. Wangchuk is being treated by a multidisciplinary team that includes specialists from both Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS Delhi. Dr Thakur stated that while his vital parameters have stabilised, his blood sugar levels continue to be notably low.

Laboratory tests revealed that Wangchuk’s potassium level stands at 3.2 mEq per litre. He has also been diagnosed with persistent pancytopenia, which includes symptoms of anaemia along with a decreased white blood cell count. These medical issues necessitate ongoing monitoring through regular investigations, according to Dr Thakur.

Treatment and Refusal of Certain Medical Procedures

As part of his treatment plan, Wangchuk is receiving oral rehydration therapy and has been given oral potassium supplements in syrup form. Notably, he has consistently refused intravenous treatment and any glucose administration, prolonging the challenge for medical staff.

Dr Thakur mentioned, “He is continuing to decline intravenous therapy and any kind of glucose administration.” The refusal of these interventions has contributed to notable dehydration and other persistent laboratory issues, indicating the need for careful medical supervision.

The doctor emphasised that the prolonged fasting has resulted in mild to moderate dehydration, creating physiological stress that requires extensive monitoring. Continuous clinical oversight is crucial for both his recovery and the timely recognition of any potential complications that may arise during his treatment.

Impact of Related Protests in New Delhi

The health update follows significant protests in New Delhi, which took place on July 20, 2023, led by CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke. The demonstrations, aimed at reaching Parliament, resulted in unrest, leading to vandalism and stone-pelting incidents.

Authorities reported that certain individuals vandalised police vehicles and engaged in stone-pelting near Regal Cinema in Connaught Place. As a result, the Delhi Police has initiated an investigation and registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with the protest-related violence.

Investigators have filed FIRs under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which includes charges related to rioting, vandalism, and obstruction of public servants in the execution of their duties. The police have confirmed that inquiries into the incidents are ongoing.
