The cricketing community is abuzz following Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s remarkable unbeaten double century during the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati on September 30. Gill’s stunning innings of 223 not out contributed to India’s record-breaking chase of 406 runs, marking their highest-ever successful run chase in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and the second-highest in ODI history.

Accompanied by centurion Rohit Sharma, Gill built a formidable opening partnership of 255 runs, which played a vital role in achieving this milestone. Despite the presence of renowned players like Rohit and Virat Kohli, Gill’s extraordinary performance captured the spotlight and overshadowed Rohit’s impressive century.

Reactions from Cricket Icons

Prominent figures in Indian cricket took to social media to express their admiration for Gill’s achievement. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised the young captain for his exceptional form, stating, “What a player, unreal form by Shubman Gill. 200.” Meanwhile, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin acknowledged the significance of Gill’s double century, calling it a continuation of the Indian double hundred legacy.

Yuvraj Singh, a legend of Indian cricket, lauded Gill’s innings as a “wonderful display of maturity and calmness.” In similar remarks, former middle-order batter Suresh Raina described the performance as breathtaking, noting that it was the fastest ever double century in ODIs, asserting that Gill is “leading from the front” as captain.

Priyank Panchal, a stalwart in Indian domestic cricket, echoed these sentiments, believing that Gill has the potential to become an all-time great in the format. Shikhar Dhawan, who once partnered with Gill as an opener, commended Gill’s pace in achieving the double century, calling it a decisive statement in his career.

Record-Breaking Milestones

Gill’s unbeaten score of 223 came off just 133 balls, featuring 26 fours and eight sixes with a strike rate exceeding 167. This score is now the third-highest individual ODI score overall, following Rohit Sharma’s 264 and Martin Guptill’s 237 not out. In achieving this feat, Gill surpassed Ishan Kishan’s record of the quickest double century in ODI history, which was set in 2022 against Bangladesh.

Notably, Gill also marked his position in the record books by becoming the first cricketer to score a double century while leading the side and the second ever after Glenn Maxwell, who accomplished a similar achievement while chasing runs. Furthermore, Gill eclipsed Virender Sehwag’s previous record for the highest ODI score by an Indian captain.

Gill’s innings also included the fastest century by an Indian skipper, as he achieved his second consecutive hundred and third century on home soil within just 62 balls. His ability to reach the 150-run mark in 89 balls set another record for the fastest by an Indian in ODIs this year, underscoring both his talent and impact on the game.

Match Summary and Performance Analysis

In the match, India opted to field first after winning the toss, witnessing West Indies post their highest-ever total in ODIs at 405 runs for seven wickets. This comprehensive performance featured centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo. Indian bowlers faced challenges, with Kuldeep Yadav managing to take two wickets while others were hit for runs.

In response, India showcased their batting prowess. The partnership between Sharma and Gill was crucial, and cameos from both Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad helped secure an eight-wicket victory for India, establishing a new benchmark in ODI chasing history.

Overall, Gill’s performance not only highlights his exceptional skills as a cricketer but also signals a promising future for Indian cricket as they head towards major international competitions.
