Saina Nehwal Attends CM’s Cup in Hyderabad, Urges Athletes to Excel

Saina Nehwal, the renowned Olympian badminton player, expressed her gratitude to the Telangana government for inviting her to the closing ceremony of the Chief Minister’s Cup 2025, held on March 24 in Hyderabad. During the event, Nehwal emphasized her hopes for more athletes from the state to secure medals at various competitive levels, including state, national, and international tournaments. Her remarks included good wishes for the Indian badminton team participating in the upcoming 2026 Thomas and Uber Cup.

Participation of Key Officials at the Event

The closing ceremony at the LB Stadium witnessed the attendance of prominent figures, such as Telangana Minister Vakiti Srihari and the Chairman of the Telangana State Sports Authority, Shivasena Reddy. The Chief Minister’s Cup, organized by the Telangana government, is aimed at nurturing sports talent from the grassroots level and establishing a robust sports infrastructure throughout the state.

Acknowledgment of Athletes’ Performances

During her speech, Nehwal congratulated the winners of the tournament and expressed pride in witnessing a substantial number of emerging players from Telangana. She articulated her ambition for the state’s athletes to excel further on larger platforms, reiterating her belief in their potential to secure honors in future competitions. Additionally, she specifically wished luck to fellow badminton star PV Sindhu and other competitors known for their experience and skill.

Upcoming Challenges for Indian Badminton Team

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has announced a strategic selection of athletes for the 2026 Thomas and Uber Cup, slated to take place in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3. The men’s team consists of a blend of seasoned players and emerging talents, including Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and the well-regarded doubles duo of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. Notably, young player Ayush Shetty has also received his first call-up following impressive performances in recent senior competitions.

Women’s Team Set for Competitive Showdown

On the women’s side, PV Sindhu will lead the Indian contingent along with top doubles pair Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, as the team aims to surpass its previous semifinal achievements. Unnati Hooda complements the lineup, joined by a cohort of promising youngsters, including Devika Sihag, Isharani Baruah, and Tanvi Sharma, further emphasizing the depth of talent in Indian badminton.
