The ruling United Russia party is on track for a significant win in the current parliamentary election, with initial official results revealing approximately 57.5 per cent of the total votes. President Vladimir Putin has characterised this election as a reflection of public backing for his governance and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This marks the first parliamentary election since Russia initiated its comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, underscoring the election’s pivotal role amidst wartime circumstances.
Other political parties, including the Communists, Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), New People, and Just Russia are trailing considerably, yet they are likely to secure seats in the 450-member State Duma. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Security Council and former president, commented on the performance of United Russia, asserting that the outcome demonstrates a continuation of Russian trust in the party’s leadership.
Significant Drone Strikes Coincide with Election Day
The elections coincided with a large-scale drone offensive by Ukraine on Moscow and several other Russian regions. Reports indicate that the attacks resulted in casualties, with three individuals in the Moscow region and two in the Kherson region, which is under Russian control, including an election official. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed the aim of the attacks was to disrupt the voting process, although he asserted it did not succeed in achieving this goal.
A facility at an oil refinery in Moscow, previously targeted in other assaults, was also damaged, with flames and significant smoke visible as voting commenced in the city. The Russian Defence Ministry reported that Ukraine had launched Flamingo cruise missiles and claimed to have downed nearly 2,000 Ukrainian drones and eight cruise missiles across various areas in the preceding 24 hours. In retaliation, Russia has stated it would escalate its strikes against Ukrainian military sites.
Cyberattacks Affect Voting Systems Amidst Election
Most candidates opposing the war were excluded from the ballot. Members of the liberal Yabloko party expressed concerns for their safety following the sentencing of two senior figures to lengthy prison terms over statements regarding the conflict. Any disparagement of the military or dissemination of information viewed as false by authorities may lead to considerable prison sentences in Russia. In a rare act of defiance, Yabloko leader Nikolai Rybakov marked his ballot by inscribing the party’s name and the phrase “For peace.”
Potential Consequences for the Kremlin Amid Opposition Dynamics
<h4Ukraine, which has suspended elections under martial law, dismissed the Russian electoral process as a “pseudo election.” Despite the expected predictable outcome, analysts speculate that the election could pose challenges for the Kremlin, particularly if voters concerned about the economic implications of the ongoing war begin shifting their allegiance towards the permitted opposition parties. Both the Communist Party and the New People party might attract votes that the government would prefer to see solidified behind United Russia amid escalating economic concerns.
