Local authorities have reported that the river levels have exceeded the warning limit and are rising at a rate of nearly one centimetre each hour, escalating concerns among those living near the riverbanks.

One particularly affected location is the Manikarnika Ghat, a site famous for conducting last rites. The floodwaters have entirely inundated the ghat and have reached the adjoining streets, making access to the cremation ground a struggle. Families are now compelled to use boats to transport bodies to the ghat, deviating from the traditional practice of carrying them on shoulders, which has increased both the emotional and financial burden on the bereaved.

Attendees of funeral processions must navigate through knee-deep water, sludge, and debris to reach the cremation site. This disruption is not just a logistical issue but also complicates an already challenging moment for grieving families, with costs for transportation and arrangements reportedly nearly doubling.

Call for Urgent Clean-Up and Better Access

Suggestions for improving access and site maintenance have been made, with residents stressing the necessity of having clear pathways and cleaner conditions. Many have expressed that heightened efforts are crucial to facilitate smoother processes for families during an already difficult time, as navigating the flooded terrain can be treacherous.

The community’s plea for timely action has gained momentum, reflecting the urgent need for preparedness in managing the implications of rising water levels. Residents have urged local officials to collaborate in ensuring that the pathways to the cremation ground remain navigable and hygienic during such crises.

Government Response and Relief Operations

In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also serves as the Lok Sabha Member of Parliament for Varanasi, held a phone conversation with District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar on Thursday. The Prime Minister requested detailed insights regarding the ongoing flood crisis and the measures implemented for affected communities.

PM Modi was briefed on the alarming rise of the Ganga’s water levels and the preparations underway for establishing relief camps for the displaced residents. He directed the district administration to act swiftly, ensuring that all essential services are provided to those impacted, and to minimise any inconveniences faced by residents.

The Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of immediate arrangements for additional relief supplies wherever needed. He stressed the importance of continuous observation of both the flood conditions and relief efforts. Moreover, PM Modi instructed officials to prioritise the particular needs of vulnerable groups, including children, women, and the elderly, residing in these camps, ensuring that they receive adequate support without delay.
