Rajasthan Man Kills Wife, Attempts to Pass It Off as Accidental Staircase Fall

The CSR Journal Magazine

A man from Jhalawar district in Rajasthan has been accused of murdering his wife, an incident that authorities initially believed to be an accident. The police stated that the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Devkripal Meena, also known as David, attempted to pass off his wife’s death as a fall from the stairs. He was taken into custody following a forensic investigation, which indicated that foul play was involved.

Devkripal, a resident of the Chandpuri area within the jurisdiction of Aklera police station, was apprehended in Kota on Monday evening. He was subsequently presented in court, where he received a seven-day police remand to facilitate further interrogation. According to the authorities, there are ongoing efforts to locate additional individuals connected to the case.

The case revolves around the death of Renu, aged 27, also known as Nimanta, which occurred in November 2025 at her in-laws’ residence in Chandipur village, falling under Aklera police station’s jurisdiction. Initially, Renu’s family attributed her death to an accidental fall. However, signs of trauma on her body and discrepancies at the scene raised doubts, leading to the filing of a murder case on November 9 based on confidential information received by law enforcement.

A thorough investigation was initiated that included forensic and technical examinations. A medical board conducting her post-mortem identified 19 separate injuries on Renu’s body, determining that the cause of death was these injuries rather than an accidental fall.

Further investigation included a review of CCTV footage from a hotel where Devkripal and his nephew were reportedly staying on the night before Renu’s death. The footage confirmed their presence at the hotel and showed that they transported Renu to a local hospital in Aklera early the next day, where she was later pronounced dead. After the incident, they allegedly fled the scene, leaving behind the deceased’s body.

A forensic team conducted a reconstruction of the crime scene, which indicated that the death could not have been the result of a fall from the stairs. The presence of bloodstains, signs of struggle, and broken objects in the vicinity provided further evidence pointing towards a murder.

Authorities suggested that marital discord could have been the motive for the alleged crime. Reports indicate that Devkripal was involved in extramarital affairs, which Renu had opposed. Tensions escalated after police attempts to detain the suspect in Kota last Saturday. During the effort, he reportedly tried to run over police with his vehicle and threw stones at them, resulting in additional charges of attempted murder and obstruction of government duty against both him and two accomplices.

Initially, the police had detained Devkripal for public disturbance in Kota. He was officially arrested in connection with his wife’s murder on Monday, as detailed by investigating officer Harshraj Singh, who emphasized that the search for other individuals related to the case is still in progress.
