Rain Alert: Multiple Western Disturbances to Lash North India with Fresh Spell of Showers

The CSR Journal Magazine

As temperatures begin their gradual ascent in northern India, new weather disturbances are imminent. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted two successive waves of western disturbances, with the initial one expected to reach northwest India on March 26. The forecast indicates a turbulent period ahead for both the hills and plains, which have already experienced unusual rainfall and hailstorms in recent weeks.

Regions Anticipating Rainfall

Rain and thunderstorms are anticipated in Himachal Pradesh as the consecutive western disturbances move in from March 26. Light rainfall is expected across various lower and middle altitudes, with some precipitation forecasted for isolated areas in the higher hills. In Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), there is a likelihood of light rain or drizzle accompanied by thunderstorms, as well as gusty winds reaching speeds of 20–30 km/h, potentially escalating to 40 km/h during the afternoon of March 26.

The temperature is predicted to fluctuate significantly during this period, with maximum temperatures expected to rise by 2–3°C over the next couple of days, followed by a decrease of 1–2°C in the subsequent 24 hours. No significant temperature changes are projected in Delhi until March 29.

Weather Patterns Observed Previously

This occurrence is not isolated, as recent weeks have seen continuous rainfall and thunderstorms due to three consecutive active western disturbances across northwest India. The IMD has analyzed these developments and confirmed that similar weather patterns are forecasted to extend into April. Widespread thunderstorm activity and light to moderate rainfall are expected over the western Himalayan region and northeastern India during the week spanning March 26 to April 1.

Generally, the intensity of these spells is likely to remain light to moderate. However, individuals in mountainous areas should exercise caution, as strong winds and lightning pose genuine risks. Those planning to travel to Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand during the upcoming weekend are advised to remain vigilant and heed local weather advisories.
