Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, at the age of fifteen, is making a noticeable impact in the world of cricket, particularly during the Duleep Trophy final. His role in the match is underscored by his influence on team captain Ishan Kishan regarding reviewing crucial umpiring decisions, illustrating his perceptive cricketing instincts. This was particularly evident when East Zone faced South Zone and amassed a formidable 708 runs in their first innings.

During the final, South Zone found themselves in a challenging position early on. Ricky Bhui appeared to edge a delivery bowled by Mukesh Kumar in the sixth over, yet the on-field umpire did not signal for an appeal. Positioned at slip, Sooryavanshi was certain that contact had been made with the bat and persistently urged Kishan to challenge the decision.

His insistence led Kishan to ultimately decide to consult the Decision Review System (DRS). The UltraEdge technology later confirmed the edge, resulting in Bhui being dismissed, showcasing Sooryavanshi’s growing confidence and acumen on the field.

Previous DRS Success in the Semi-Final

This was not the first occasion that Sooryavanshi had displayed his capability in managing reviews. Earlier in the Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone, he showcased similar awareness after Kishan left the field due to a finger injury. With Mukesh Kumar’s counsel, he successfully called for a review on a caught-behind appeal involving Aryan Juyal, which confirmed the edge through UltraEdge technology.

This incident marked his initial successful review as acting captain, reflecting his ability to step up under pressure and make advantageous decisions for the team. His awareness and advocacy for DRS reviews indicate a maturity beyond his years, making him a valuable asset for East Zone.

However, not all of Sooryavanshi’s review requests have been accurate. In the Duleep Trophy final, he misjudged a request for an lbw appeal against Devdutt Padikkal. After the batter was struck on the pads by Md Kounain Quraishi, Sooryavanshi again persuaded Kishan to opt for a review. Unfortunately for East Zone, the ball-tracking technology indicated that the delivery was missing the stumps, resulting in a lost review.

Consistent Performance With Bat and Ball

In addition to his role as an astute decision-maker, Sooryavanshi’s performance with both bat and ball has shown improvement throughout the tournament. His contribution during the final was notable, scoring 44 runs off 37 balls, adding to East Zone’s commanding position in the match. This followed a period of quieter performance during the quarter-final against the NorthEast Zone, where he managed only eight runs but took two wickets.

His recent form has been rewarding, with a knock of 92 in the semi-final against Central Zone elevating his standing in the team. Overall, Sooryavanshi has achieved 184 runs in four innings, averaging a commendable 46, establishing himself as an impactful player at such a young age.
