Rahul Gandhi to Lead INDIA Bloc March to Supreme Court

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a strong critique against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, declaring that leaders of the INDIA bloc would march to the Supreme Court on Monday to file a petition against him. Gandhi accused the Election Commission of enabling ‘vote chori’, an assertion that signifies his larger campaign to protect the integrity of the Constitution and the electoral system in India.

During a press briefing at the Congress headquarters, Gandhi urged Kumar to resign and alleged that he should cooperate with the investigation. He stressed that the opposition is challenging more significant forces that are operating behind Kumar. He emphasised that he is aware of Kumar’s discomfort with his role, stating, ‘We know Gyanesh Kumar is unable to sleep at night; I am telling him directly you will not survive as CEC.’

Gandhi’s remarks corresponded with a call for public mobilization, urging both party workers and young people to participate in the ‘Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy’. He questioned the restrictions imposed in Delhi, suggesting they were an effort to suppress dissent. He stated, ‘Express yourself in whatever form you can against what is happening,’ indicating that widespread participation is crucial for their cause.

Planned Activities and Mobilisation

According to Gandhi, the gathering for the march is scheduled at the Connaught Place-Barakhamba Road junction at 1.30 pm on Monday. He announced that the formal petition would be lodged at 3 pm and invited everyone to display solidarity with the Constitution. The emphasis on participation highlights the opposition’s strategy to rally public support against perceived threats to democratic values.

Additionally, Gandhi claimed that about 200 government officials are in communication with the opposition, reportedly providing information that could substantiate their claims against the Election Commission. He underlined the importance of greater public involvement, inviting diverse groups, including those from the BJP, to join the movement as a collective effort to safeguard the Constitution.

In his statements, Gandhi articulated that the struggle extends beyond individual political leaders like himself or Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He framed it as a fight for the nation, asserting, ‘The importance is of India and its Constitution, the expression of people and the future of the country.’

Concerns Over Electoral Process and Restrictions in Delhi

The opposition’s demand for Kumar’s resignation has been fuelled by a report from The Indian Express, which indicated that other Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had voiced objections numerous times regarding decisions made by the commission over the past ten months. This has raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process and the functioning of the Election Commission itself.

In response to the scrutiny surrounding these objections, the Election Commission reaffirmed that differing opinions within the institution are common and maintain that all decisions are legally valid and procedurally sound. Gandhi further highlighted the ongoing restrictions in Delhi, questioning why the capital is under heavy police presence, which he described as an attempt to intimidate citizens trying to exercise their right to protest.

By characterising Delhi as a ‘fortress,’ Gandhi accused the government of wanting to control dissent with excessive security measures, which included deploying over 30,000 police officers on the streets. His comments reflect the opposition’s strategy of framing their grievances as part of a broader battle for democratic rights within the country.
