Rahul Gandhi Highlights Women’s Contributions at ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ in Pune

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, underscored the significant role of women in India while addressing the Congress party’s Pune segment of the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign on August 22. He articulated that the true strength of India lies in its diverse citizenry, particularly emphasizing the contributions of women, whom he described as living 70 crore unique journeys filled with aspirations.

During his address, Gandhi responded to the common inquiry regarding India’s greatest asset. He noted that while various answers might emerge—such as the economy, military, or healthcare—his perspective firmly points to the women of the nation. He characterised their collective potential as invaluable to the country’s future.

Gandhi portrayed women as inherently sensitive and compassionate, asserting that these attributes are essential for national advancement. He contended that societal perspectives often confine women to limited roles, thereby neglecting their multifaceted contributions in both professional and personal spheres.

Challenging Societal Perceptions

The Congress MP critiqued the societal norm of categorising women strictly as daughters, wives, or mothers. He acknowledged that while these roles can hold value, they should not represent the entirety of a woman’s identity. Gandhi stressed that women excelling in varied fields deserve recognition beyond these traditional labels.

He highlighted the achievements of brilliant women across different sectors—professionals, athletes, artists—and asserted that their identities should encompass more than the confines imposed by societal expectations. In doing so, he called for a broader understanding of women’s roles that move beyond conventional frameworks.

Furthermore, Gandhi referenced historical texts to illustrate perceived restrictions on women’s independence. He cited the Manusmriti to emphasise the limitations placed upon women throughout history, stating that such notions are an embarrassment and should never have been endorsed.

‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ Campaign Overview

Gandhi launched the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign, aimed at addressing student grievances related to education and recruitment, in mid-2026. This nationwide initiative seeks to provide a platform for students’ concerns, ranging from exam irregularities and paper leaks to the rising costs of education and the privatisation of higher learning institutions.

The campaign specifically advocates for equal job opportunities and greater safety measures for prospective candidates. It denotes a commitment to addressing issues connected to corruption within competitive recruitment processes, thereby supporting aspiring individuals seeking robust career paths.

Before the Pune event, the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign took place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on August 8, and previously in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on July 17. The inaugural session occurred in Kota, Rajasthan, on June 17, marking the beginning of a structured effort to engage students actively in political discourse.
