Rahul Gandhi Criticises Delay in Maharashtra TET Examination Date

The CSR Journal Magazine

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has expressed concern over the lack of a new date for the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), which was cancelled due to a question paper leak. Nearly two weeks post-cancellation, Gandhi stated that lakhs of aspiring teachers are experiencing uncertainty regarding their future. According to him, the delay is a direct consequence of systemic failures.

On social media, Gandhi highlighted that approximately six lakh candidates are left awaiting clarity from the government. He criticised the authorities for not providing a revised schedule or outlining the next steps in the process, indicating that the candidates are suffering the repercussions of circumstances beyond their control.

Gandhi remarked on the injustice faced by candidates, noting that those accountable for the breach remain unpunished while honest individuals bear the burden of this failure. He articulated that the examination process—which involves extensive preparation, completion of applications, payment of fees, and travel to examination centres—has ultimately led to disappointment for many hopeful educators.

Demands from the Maharashtra Government

In light of the situation, Rahul Gandhi has outlined three key demands directed at the Maharashtra government. Firstly, he called for an immediate announcement of a new examination date for the TET. Secondly, he urged authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for the question paper leak, instead of imposing penalties on the candidates.

Lastly, Gandhi advocated for age relaxation for those candidates whose opportunities have been adversely affected due to the cancellation of the examination. He stressed that the fault lies with the system rather than the individual candidates, asserting that it is unjust for the candidates to face repercussions for institutional failures.

In his statements, Gandhi emphasised the significance of these candidates, identifying them as the future educators of India. He noted how years of preparation and dedication are being undermined by administrative lapses and failures.

Background of the Maharashtra TET Cancellation

The Maharashtra TET was originally scheduled for June 28 but was called off just one day before due to the discovery of a question paper leak. Investigations revealed that the paper was allegedly compromised at a printing press located in Thane, leading the state government to cancel the examination to uphold its integrity.

Following the cancellation, the police initiated an inquiry and a case was registered regarding the matter. However, despite ongoing investigations, a new date for the examination remains undisclosed. The cancellation has left around six lakh candidates in limbo, all of whom are eagerly awaiting official communication regarding the rescheduling of the examination.

As the issue continues to unfold, Gandhi has indicated his intention to address the rising concern of paper leaks in a public meeting in Dehradun on July 17. He has called for a transformative change in the education sector to ensure that diligent students are rewarded for their efforts rather than victimised due to systemic failures.
