PV Sindhu to Miss All England Championships Due to Travel Issues

The CSR Journal Magazine

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, is unable to participate in the All England Championships, which kick off on Tuesday, following travel disruptions caused by the recent closure of airspace in the Gulf region. The situation escalated amidst the ongoing bombing of Iran by the United States, which has led to widespread flight cancellations. Sindhu has been stranded in Dubai since Saturday, as flights have been suspended due to the tense environment resulting from US and Israeli strikes on Iran, followed by Iran’s retaliation.

Security Scare Forces Relocation in Dubai

Sindhu and her team, which includes her Indonesian coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama, faced a precarious situation after an explosion occurred near their accommodation. In response, they were relocated to a more secure area as tensions heightened nearby. She was supposed to compete against Supanida Katethong from Thailand in the opening round. However, with Dubai’s airspace remaining closed, it has become impossible for her to participate.

BWF Monitors Crisis, Considers Schedule Changes

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is closely monitoring the situation and has stated it is prepared to assist teams facing delays or route changes. The BWF is also contemplating potential adjustments to the competition schedule to accommodate any players who may face difficulties in arriving on time.

Indian Shuttlers Take Alternate Routes to Birmingham

While Sindhu’s absence is confirmed, a number of her fellow Indian players have successfully made their way to Birmingham via alternative routes, including through Singapore and Africa. It remains uncertain how the extended travel may affect their performance, especially in terms of preparation.

Lakshya Sen to Lead India in Sindhu’s Absence

In Sindhu’s absence, Lakshya Sen, India’s top men’s singles player, will take on the role of leading the Indian contingent. Alongside him is young player Ayush Shetty, both of whom have arrived in Birmingham without facing any travel complications. Lakshya has been drawn against Shi Yu Qi, the world No. 1 from China, while Ayush faces Alwi Farhan from Indonesia in the initial rounds.

Tough Draws Await Lakshya and Ayush

For Lakshya, who reached the semifinals in this tournament previously and was the runner-up last year, the match against Shi presents a significant challenge, particularly given his record of four losses in five previous encounters against the Chinese player. Ayush, meanwhile, looks to improve his standing against Farhan, having lost three of their five meetings, including the last one at the Indonesia Masters earlier this year.

Women’s Singles Players Face Stiff Challenges

In the women’s singles category, Malvika Bansod faces a tough test against Chen Yufei, the champion from the Tokyo Olympics. Unnati Hooda, who encountered travel issues with her flight being cancelled on Sunday, managed to re-route her trip through Africa and must contend with jet lag as she prepares to compete against Thailand’s eighth seed, Pornpawee Chochuwong.

India’s Doubles Teams Gear Up for Key Battles

In men’s doubles, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will lead India’s charge against Malaysia’s Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai in their opening match. The women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, having reached the semifinals in the last two years, will be competing against Japan’s Sayaka Hirota and Ayako Sakuramoto.

Mixed Doubles Line-Up & India’s All England Legacy

The mixed doubles event features Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto facing Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin from Malaysia, while Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde are set to compete against France’s fifth seeds, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue. Historically, Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand remain the only Indians to have won the All England title, with Saina Nehwal and Lakshya Sen coming close in recent years as runners-up.
