Prolonged Curfew Imposes Hardships in Noshki, Balochistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The town of Noshki in Balochistan has been under an extended curfew for nearly two months, leading to significant disruptions in everyday life, education, and livelihoods. Local residents report that strict movement restrictions remain in place, severely limiting their ability to work and access essential services. People are prohibited from leaving the town after 6 PM and are not allowed to enter before 9 AM, impacting healthcare access and various routine activities.

Impact on Education and Student Welfare

Students commuting from surrounding rural areas are particularly affected by these restrictions. Many have experienced delays in reaching their schools, leading to missed classes and interruptions in their academic schedules, raising concerns about potential long-term educational repercussions. Additionally, a middle school located along the main highway in Killi Ghareebabad has reportedly been converted into a camp for security personnel, forcing several students to suspend their studies at the institution and exacerbating the educational crisis in the region.

Concerns Over Civil Liberties and Security Operations

Residents have expressed alarm over perceived restrictions on civil liberties, with motorcyclists facing frequent checks during security operations. Some individuals have claimed to experience harassment and mistreatment from authorities during these checks. Tensions in the area have been further heightened following a reported incident where security forces allegedly fired upon two motorcyclists heading toward a picnic spot outside the city. One individual sustained serious injuries and was subsequently transported to Quetta for medical treatment. As of now, officials have not released a statement regarding the incident.

Context of Heightened Security Measures

The extended curfew is occurring against a backdrop of increased security tensions in Balochistan, particularly following renewed activity by the Baloch Liberation Army, which has initiated what they term “Operation Herof Phase II.” In light of these developments, local political and religious groups have called for consultations to address the ongoing situation in the region.

Calls for Easing Restrictions and Addressing Human Rights

Members of civil society are urging authorities to lift the existing restrictions, restore access to education, and address rising human rights concerns. The continued state of lockdown and operational security measures has led to a growing call for dialogue to resolve the challenges faced by the residents of Noshki and surrounding areas.
