The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 25, Prime Minister of India engaged in a conversation with United States President Donald Trump, where both leaders assessed the escalating tensions in West Asia. As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s dedication to achieving de-escalation and expediting the restoration of peace in the region. The Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of maintaining the Strait of Hormuz as an open, secure, and accessible passage, emphasizing its critical role in fostering global peace, stability, and economic prosperity.

Continued Diplomatic Engagements

Both leaders resolved to maintain communication and persist in their joint efforts aimed at fostering peace and stability within West Asia. Furthermore, the Prime Minister also held discussions with Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of Sri Lanka. The talks focused on the implications of ongoing tensions in West Asia on global energy security. They collectively recognized the need to ensure the safety of shipping lanes, which are vital for global trade and socio-economic stability. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to collaborate with Sri Lanka in addressing mutual challenges under the Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR Vision.

India’s Response to Regional Developments

In parallel developments, India’s External Affairs Minister convened with the Iranian Ambassador to India to discuss the shifting dynamics in the region. The Minister expressed gratitude for Iran’s assistance to Indian nationals amid the ongoing crisis. The MEA underscored its continuous monitoring of the situation, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the Indian community abroad, particularly in regions affected by the increased tensions.

Efforts for Indian Nationals Abroad

The Ministry has established a dedicated control room that remains operational to provide assistance for Indian nationals in the Gulf and West Asia. Indian diplomatic missions in these areas are actively offering real-time support. They are working in coordination with Indian community organizations and local authorities to facilitate the safe return of citizens. Since February 28, over 426,000 passengers have returned to India via 2,149 flights, including non-scheduled services. Additional flights are currently operating from countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, which includes non-scheduled services from Qatar Airways.

Challenges Faced by Repatriating Nationals

However, the repatriation effort encounters challenges, such as airspace restrictions currently imposed by Kuwait and Bahrain. Special flight arrangements are being coordinated specifically for Indian nationals needing to return. The Indian government is firmly committed to supporting the repatriation of its citizens, particularly those stranded in locations like Iran and Israel, ensuring safe and prompt travel for affected individuals.
