Pradyut Bordoloi Leaves Congress to Join BJP Ahead of Assam Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 18, Pradyut Bordoloi, a Member of Parliament, announced his resignation from the Congress party prior to the upcoming Assam legislative assembly elections. His transition to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) was confirmed in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia.

Reasons for Resignation

Bordoloi cited feelings of being sidelined by the party leadership as a pivotal factor in his decision to leave Congress. He clarified that his resignation was due to “multiple issues” rather than solely concerning the allocation of election tickets. “For me, getting a ticket was not a question of life and death. There were multiple issues. What was important for me was to hold my head high. The Congress party has given me a lot,” Bordoloi stated during a media interaction.

Political Landscape

The MP emphasized that he was in his second term in the Lok Sabha and had three years remaining in his current tenure. “I could have accepted the humiliation if I wanted to remain as an MP. But I decided to leave and work,” he added. His departure from Congress may have significant implications as the party seeks to field candidates effectively in the upcoming elections.

Support from Congress Colleague

Navajyoti Talukdar, who recently resigned as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Vice-president, announced Bordoloi’s move to the BJP. He remarked, “Today, our MP Pradyut Bordoloi is joining the BJP. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, is a very dynamic leader. We have spoken to the Chief Minister of Assam.”

Impact on Upcoming Elections

In the wake of Bordoloi’s resignation, Congress has nominated his son to contest from the Margherita Assembly constituency for the forthcoming elections. This strategic decision highlights the party’s effort to maintain its foothold in the region, especially in light of recent leadership transitions.

Election Timeline

The Election Commission of India has scheduled the Assam assembly elections for all 126 constituencies to take place in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting to occur on May 4. The political contest is anticipated to be fiercely contested between the incumbent BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and the Congress party, which seeks a return to power. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aims to secure a third consecutive term, while Congress aims to regain authority in the state.
