PM Modi Launches Delhi Metro Expansion on International Women’s Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated International Women’s Day by inaugurating an extensive expansion of the Delhi Metro, entailing an investment of Rs 18,000 crore. The newly activated metro lines include the 12-kilometer stretch from Majlis Park to Maujpur and the 9-kilometer route from Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk.

This development brings Metro connectivity to areas such as Wazirabad and Bhajanpura, improving public transportation in the region. Additionally, construction has commenced on three more corridors aimed at further integrating the city’s transit system.

Government Initiatives for Women’s Safety and Welfare

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister, describing the Metro expansion as a significant boon for women’s safety and convenience. She noted that over the past year, substantial initiatives have been implemented under the Ladli Scheme, which has provided financial support to 70,000 girls.

The government’s efforts have included the establishment of 7,000 smart classrooms and 100 digital libraries, alongside the availability of free cervical cancer vaccinations for girls aged 14 to 15. These measures reflect a broader commitment to women’s empowerment in the capital.

Infrastructure Development and Urban Planning

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that PM Modi dedicated a series of projects worth around Rs 33,500 crore to the public. This includes the inauguration of three metro lines and the announcement of over 6,500 residential units.

Khattar emphasized the dual significance of March 8, underlining its importance for both women’s recognition and urban development in Delhi. He highlighted the government’s efforts in dedicating residences in Sarojini Nagar to the public along with the Metro updates. This expansion is seen as a crucial step towards modernizing the city’s infrastructure.

Historical Context of Delhi Metro Development

Khattar recalled the historical moment of the first metro’s inauguration in Delhi by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee 24 years ago, when he envisioned it as a symbol of modern India and progress.

Reflecting on this history, Khattar remarked that the vision laid out by Vajpayee is gradually materializing under the current administration. He acknowledged the significant blueprint for metro expansion set forth by PM Modi, noting that it contributes to the ongoing modernization of the transport network.
