Pankaj Kamboj’s journey towards a career in service has been marked by significant difficulties. He lost his father at the age of 14, growing up in a farming family near the border of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Following this tragic loss, he faced multiple disappointments in competitive examinations. However, through perseverance, he has now successfully cleared the UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant examination and is preparing to join as an officer.

Pankaj’s family relied on farming for their livelihood, managing approximately four acres of land. Part of their agricultural output was dedicated to food production while the remainder generated income. Even amidst financial restrictions, education was highly valued. His mother, who had never been educated, became a source of inspiration for him. Her belief in his purpose motivated Pankaj throughout his struggles. He expressed that her encouragement has always been vital in his life.

Struggles with Competitive Examinations

After completing his schooling, Pankaj moved to Delhi in 2021 to pursue government examination preparations independently. Shunning costly coaching centres, he utilised online resources and compiled his own study materials. He graduated from Delhi University in 2023, finishing at the top of his cohort. Despite his academic success, initial attempts at the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination did not yield positive results. Out of his first three attempts, he failed each time, primarily due to challenges with the CSAT component.

In contrast, Pankaj experienced success in defence examinations. He successfully cleared the Combined Defence Services examination and the Air Force Common Admission Test, both on multiple occasions. However, clearing these written tests was not the end of his challenges, as he faced several failures during the Services Selection Board process, including receiving conference-outs. Every rejection forced him to begin anew, yet he remained hopeful. He recounted that each defeat led to new opportunities, particularly with the next CDS examination.

The financial and familial pressures weighed heavily on him as relatives occasionally doubted his persistence in pursuing a career in government service. Nevertheless, Pankaj’s determination to succeed propelled him forward. His aspiration extended beyond mere examination success; he aimed to be the first individual from his region to clear a UPSC examination. After considerable time and effort, he ultimately achieved success in the UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant examination, paving the way to fulfilling his goal.

Lessons from Perseverance and Achievement

Pankaj Kamboj’s narrative illustrates the impact of determination and the journey through adversity. His years of preparation, marked by both triumphs and setbacks, have equipped him with resilience. With the successful clearance of the CAPF examination, he is set to take on the role of an Assistant Commandant. Simultaneously, he continues his pursuit of the Civil Services journey after passing the CSE Preliminary Examination on his fourth attempt.

Pankaj’s story is not solely about the achievement of passing exams; it reflects a broader theme of persistence in the face of challenges.
