Pakistan Plans to Honour Two Mumbai Doctors for Keeping Jinnah’s Illness Confidential

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan is set to award the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the country’s highest civilian honour, to two doctors from Mumbai for their discretion regarding the health of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. A federal minister announced this development, highlighting the significance of the doctors’ actions during a pivotal moment in history. The recognition is being attributed to their commitment to professional confidentiality when they served Jinnah.

The Islamabad Planning Minister, Ahsan Iqbal, revealed this nomination through a post on X following the announcement of this year’s civilian and military awards on August 14. Iqbal expressed appreciation for the doctors’ dedication, stating, “I feel honoured to have had the privilege, as Chairman of the Awards Committee, of nominating for the Nishan-e-Imtiaz two remarkable doctors.” He referred to them as a physician and a radiologist, both hailing from the Parsi community of Bombay.

Iqbal elaborated on the importance of their role, indicating that any public knowledge about Jinnah’s health condition could have had far-reaching consequences for the formation of Pakistan in 1947. He underscored the weight of this secret, describing it as one of the 20th century’s most significant. Historical accounts suggest that if Lord Mountbatten had been aware of Jinnah’s serious illness, he might have postponed the Partition, possibly altering the trajectory of history.

Historical Context of the Award

The timing of this announcement is noteworthy, as Pakistan traditionally reveals its national awards on Independence Day every year. These honours are formally presented at a presidential ceremony on Pakistan Day, which occurs on March 23. This year’s awards are significant as they connect a monumental moment in the country’s foundation to the professional integrity demonstrated by the two doctors who kept Jinnah’s condition private.

Jinnah, regarded as the father of Pakistan, was suffering from tuberculosis, an illness that was considered incurable during his lifetime. He passed away only a year after the Partition. This context enhances the impact of the health professionals’ discretion, underscoring their role in a defining period for the nation.

The announcement serves as a reminder of the intricate links between personal health and historical events. It acknowledges how the confidentiality maintained by the two Mumbai doctors potentially influenced the formation of a new nation. Additionally, this recognition extends beyond the immediate personal achievement of the doctors, symbolising the intersection of healthcare and national history.

Significance of Professional Ethics

The Pakistani government’s decision to honour the two doctors highlights the value placed on professional ethics in healthcare. Iqbal noted that their adherence to medical confidentiality played a crucial role in the larger narrative of Pakistan’s establishment. He remarked that their dedication to their professional oath not only served their patient but also contributed significantly to the context in which Pakistan emerged as an independent nation.

This recognition aligns with Pakistan’s tradition of commemorating individuals who have played essential roles in its history, as seen previously in the awarding of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz to notable personalities such as actor Dilip Kumar in 1998. The current recognition of the two doctors from Mumbai underscores the enduring respect for those who navigate the complexities of healthcare in ways that transcend borders.

While the identities of the doctors remain undisclosed, their story represents a significant intersection between professional integrity and historical impact. The forthcoming award signifies an official acknowledgment of their role in a transformative period within Pakistan’s history, framing them as crucial figures in the country’s narrative.
