Pakistan Launches Air Attacks in Afghanistan; Reports of Civilian Casualties

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan has executed a series of airstrikes in Afghanistan, affecting multiple regions including Kabul, Kandahar, Paktia, and Paktika. Afghan officials claim that these attacks resulted in the destruction of civilian homes and the deaths of at least four individuals. The Taliban stated that among those killed were women and two children, highlighting the human toll of this recent military escalation.

Taliban Condemns Strikes, Cites Civilian Damage and Ramadan Timing

The Taliban administration reported that the airstrikes targeted numerous locations, including residential areas, resulting in significant damage. In addition to civilian structures, some bombs reportedly struck empty desert regions and unoccupied land. In a formal statement, the Taliban condemned the strikes, describing them as a continuation of “cruel aggression” by the Pakistani military. They emphasized that these attacks, occurring during the final days of Ramadan and on the eve of Eid, demonstrated a blatant disregard for humanitarian principles.

Fuel Depot Near Kandahar Airport Hit in One of the Attacks

Adding to the tensions, the Taliban noted that one of the strikes hit a fuel depot owned by the private airline Kam Air near Kandahar Airport. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that this depot provided fuel to both civilian airlines and United Nations flights. This incident underscores the increasingly volatile situation between the two nations.

Airstrikes Follow Rising Border Tensions Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

The recent airstrikes follow a spike in tensions that began last month when Pakistan conducted air operations inside Afghanistan, which it claimed were aimed at militant strongholds. However, Afghan authorities countered these assertions, framing the strikes as a violation of their sovereignty and launching their own retaliatory actions. Following those events, both sides had reported a lull in hostilities, suggesting a temporary decrease in violence along the 2,600 km border that separates the countries.

Militancy Allegations Deepen Diplomatic Rift

Pakistan’s military has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the latest claims of airstrikes. The enduring issue of militancy continues to fuel discord between the two nations. Pakistan has consistently accused Afghanistan of harboring militants responsible for attacks on its territory, a charge that Afghanistan rejects. The Taliban argues that the issue of militancy lies within Pakistan itself.

China-Led Mediation Efforts Aim to Ease Growing Conflict

Amid these rising tensions, there have been ongoing efforts to mitigate conflicts between the two nations. Mediation initiatives, reportedly facilitated by China, have aimed to deescalate the situation. Pakistan’s foreign ministry representative, Tahir Andrabi, indicated that Islamabad and Beijing are engaged in a “dialogue process” concerning Afghanistan, suggesting a diplomatic avenue may be pursued amidst the turmoil.
