Omani Co-Pilot Identified as Hamam Alhamami in Flight Attack Incident, Linked to Extremist Views

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hamam Alhamami, the Omani co-pilot alleged to have attacked Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar aboard a Flydubai flight heading to Tel Aviv, has been identified as an individual with a history of extremist views. According to sources from Al Arabiya English, Alhamami previously faced restrictions on his flying privileges within Oman due to concerns about his radical beliefs, which were reportedly influenced during a prior stay in Syria.

Following his removal from flight duties, Alhamami purportedly left Oman and spent considerable time outside the country, primarily in Syria. It is alleged that this period contributed to the development of his extremist ideology, leading to his subsequent relocation to the United Arab Emirates.

Media reports indicate that Alhamami’s ties to extremism raised significant alarms in the aviation community. CNN disclosed that he was dismissed from his position at Oman’s national airline in the previous year for similar concerns but was later reassigned within the organisation.

Investigation and Findings

Investigators are currently looking into Alhamami’s background and motives following the incident that occurred on September 30. Reports indicate that he had been with Flydubai for only eight months and had previously worked for Royal Air Maroc. The Omani national allegedly harboured pro-Palestinian sentiments and was in possession of pamphlets and publications from groups advocating for Palestinian causes. This has prompted inquiries into the potential implications of his beliefs on the flight’s operations.

A regional diplomatic source informed CNN that the individual was born in the United Arab Emirates, to an Omani father and a Syrian mother, and resided in the UAE for several years. These details have raised questions regarding the security protocols surrounding the hiring of pilots who may have affiliations linked to countries without diplomatic relations with Israel.

An Israeli official has confirmed that several governmental agencies are involved in the investigation, aiming to understand how Alhamami was selected to be a member of the flight crew on a route to Israel, given the diplomatic tensions. The investigation seeks to ensure aviation security standards are upheld to prevent such incidents in the future.

Details of the Flight Incident

The incident aboard the Flydubai flight highlighted significant safety concerns. During the flight, Alhamami reportedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar in an apparent attempt to take control of the aircraft, which resulted in an alarming descent of approximately 16,000 feet within two minutes. The situation escalated to the point where a hijacking distress signal was transmitted.

Despite suffering critical injuries, Captain Machchhar displayed remarkable courage, managing to resist the attack and reopen the cockpit door, allowing other crew members and passengers to assist him in restraining Alhamami. This collaborative effort enabled the crew to regain control of the flight.

Following the confrontation, the aircraft made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. All 180 occupants were able to disembark without any injuries, and Captain Machchhar has since been commended for his bravery during the harrowing event.
