Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit Apologizes Over Epstein Link Amid Criticism

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Norwegian royal family is facing intense scrutiny following the revelation of Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s past communications with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. A number of charities have begun to reassess or sever their connections with the Crown Princess as public debate continues regarding her potential role as queen.

Following the disclosure of hundreds of emails exchanged between her and Epstein from 2011 to 2014, Crown Princess Mette-Marit expressed a “profound apology” to the citizens of Norway. In a statement released from the palace, she stated, “I also apologize for the situation in which I have placed the Royal House, especially the King and Queen.”

The emails, which were made public through files released by the U.S. Justice Department, include discussions about potential meetings and indicate that the Crown Princess had spent four days at Epstein’s residence in Palm Beach, Florida, during a time when he was reportedly absent. In the emails from 2012, Mette-Marit referred to Epstein using endearing terms such as “sweetheart” and “soft-hearted,” highlighting a familiarity that has since raised eyebrows in Norway.

One particular exchange noted that Epstein mentioned he was on a “wife hunt” and expressed a preference for Scandinavian women. In her reply, the Crown Princess responded that Paris is “good for adultery” and remarked that “Scandis better wife material.” The informal and casual nature of the correspondence has surprised many, especially since Mette-Marit appeared to know about Epstein’s criminal history, acknowledging in one email that she had researched his past.”

Initially, the palace described the situation as one involving “poor judgment,” but following public pressure, a further statement was issued asserting that the Crown Princess was “deeply saddened” for not recognizing earlier the true nature of Epstein’s character. The statement reflected her desire to clarify her position but noted that she was in a difficult situation and required time to gather her thoughts.

Compounding the drama surrounding the royal family is a separate controversy involving Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, who has faced allegations of rape. During his testimony in an Oslo court, Høiby, 29, broke down as he denied four counts of rape. Notably, Høiby is not in the line of succession; he was born before Mette-Marit’s marriage to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001.

In light of these developments, Crown Prince Haakon has released a rare statement emphasizing that Høiby is a private citizen and is not a member of the Royal House of Norway, thus underscoring the young man’s autonomy amidst the allegations. The Norwegian public and media continue to follow these unfolding events closely, reflective of public interest in both the royal family and issues of accountability and transparency in high-profile figures.
