No Link Between Indian Govt and Violent Crimes, Says Canadian Police Chief

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent statement following a diplomatic outreach between India and Canada, the head of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Commissioner Mike Duheme, assured that there are no current threats to Canadians from individuals linked to the Indian government. Duheme’s remarks came amid investigations that have not revealed any connections between ongoing criminal activities in Canada and India.

Previously, Canada had made allegations against India regarding interference and transnational repression, which included accusations of threats and targeted killings. However, Duheme noted that the latest investigations indicate a different narrative. In an interview with a local news channel, he emphasized, “We’re not seeing any connection right now with any foreign entity.”

Public Safety Concerns Addressed

When discussing public safety, Duheme acknowledged that while there have been incidents of harassment and intimidation, there is currently no evidence linking these acts to any foreign government. “Connecting the dots to a foreign entity, we don’t have that,” he stated. This clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny following a report by the Canadian Commission, which suggested electoral interference by the Indian government, a claim that further strained relations between the two countries.

India has consistently denied any allegations of foreign interference in Canada, maintaining its stance on the matter. The situation has previously escalated, especially after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concerns in 2023 regarding the alleged involvement of Indian agents in the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India strongly rejected these claims, leading to heightened tensions and the expulsion of diplomats from both nations.

Cultural and Diplomatic Thaw

Recent diplomatic engagements, particularly between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, signify a potential thaw in relations. Following meetings, Carney expressed an intention to reset ties with India, stating, “We are one family.” This is notable given the backdrop of deteriorating relations with the United States, indicating a shift toward re-establishing connections with India.

Officials from the Canadian government have previously communicated that Ottawa’s worries regarding interference by Indian agents are no longer prevalent. A senior official hinted that Carney’s visit to India last month was indicative of a cooling of tensions and would not have taken place if concerns about ongoing interference had existed.

Reevaluation of Previous Claims

Duheme also mentioned that earlier claims, particularly those made in 2024 regarding foreign connections to local criminal organizations, were based on available evidence at that time. He stated, “What we’re seeing right now, the dots don’t always connect to a foreign entity.” This restatement aligns with recent shifts in the Canadian perspective toward foreign involvement in domestic issues, particularly regarding the Indian government.
