No Fuel Shortage in Jammu and Kashmir: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Urges Against Panic Buying

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed concerns on March 27 regarding panic buying of fuel in the Union Territory. Observing long queues forming outside petrol stations, he emphasized the importance of remaining calm and urged citizens to refrain from unnecessary hoarding. Abdullah stated that if the current situation persists, he may be compelled to take stringent actions, including the potential closure of petrol stations for several days.

Reassurance on Fuel Supplies

During his remarks to the media, Abdullah reassured the public that there is no actual shortage of essential fuel resources. He attributed the current situation to rampant rumors and misinformation circulating within the community. “It is regrettable that when the government speaks, no one listens, but everyone believes rumors,” he commented. He also referenced a recent meeting where it was clearly established that the supplies of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders remain adequate.

Public Appeal for Calmness

In his appeal, Abdullah requested that residents avoid relying on unverified social media claims that suggest a fuel crisis. He indicated that he would participate in a video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Chief Ministers the following day to discuss the matter further. His emphasis was on stabilizing the situation to prevent further disruptions caused by public panic.

Government’s Assurance on Fuel Security

Furthermore, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that the country’s petroleum and LPG supply chains are secure and stable. According to a ministry statement, all retail fuel outlets possess sufficient stock and there is no fuel scarcity reported anywhere across India. The Ministry cautioned citizens against falling prey to misinformation, describing the ongoing disinformation campaign as both deliberate and coordinated in nature, aimed at inciting unfounded panic among the populace.

Continued Availability of Resources

The Ministry reiterated that as a net exporter of petroleum products, India’s domestic availability of petrol and diesel is structurally assured, thus reinforcing confidence in the fuel supply system. Citizens have been encouraged to refrain from panic buying and to trust official statements regarding fuel availability. The statement concluded by expressing hope that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir would stabilize as the government works to address the concerns of its citizens.
