Naxalite Leader Prashant Bose, Carrying Rs 1 Crore Bounty, Dies in Ranchi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prashant Bose, a prominent Naxalite leader who had a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head, reportedly passed away on Thursday while receiving treatment at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Officials stated that the 82-year-old Bose was earlier incarcerated in Birsa Munda Jail before being transferred to the hospital due to deteriorating health conditions.

RIMS Superintendent Dr. Hiren Birua confirmed that Bose had been suffering from multiple health issues. His condition worsened significantly, prompting the authorities to relocate him to RIMS, where he ultimately died in the early hours of the morning. The circumstances surrounding his medical care and eventual death have drawn attention from various quarters.

Background of Prashant Bose

Prashant Bose, also known by the alias ‘Kishan da’, was noted as one of the highest-ranking leaders within the Communist Party of India (Maoist), operating across multiple states including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. His involvement with the Naxal movement dates back to the 1960s, making him a significant figure in the organisation’s history.

Authorities indicated that Bose was apprehended on November 12, 2021, during a police operation in the Kolhan region of Jharkhand. This operation was conducted based on specific intelligence that led to his arrest. Alongside him, his wife Sheela Marandi, who is also linked to the CPI Maoist, was taken into custody.

The arrests received considerable attention, with Inspector General (IG) Amol Vinukant Homkar characterising Bose’s capture as a “significant achievement” for law enforcement agencies combating Naxalite activities in the region. The police had stated that Bose’s long-standing association with the Naxal movement made his arrest particularly impactful.

Official Statements and Reactions

Jharkhand’s Director General of Police (DGP) Niraj Sinha remarked on the prominence of Bose within the Naxalite movement, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces in their dealings with such influential leaders. Although the police are reportedly still gathering comprehensive information about his criminal activities and affiliations, his legacy as a pivotal figure remains entrenched in the history of the Naxalite rebellion.

The recent developments surrounding Bose’s death may prompt further discussions and analyses regarding the ongoing issues of Maoist violence in India, as well as the state’s strategies for dealing with insurgency. Local authorities are likely to assess the implications of his passing on both the Naxalite movement and efforts towards counterinsurgency.

Bose’s demise also raises questions about healthcare provisions within the Indian prison system, especially for high-profile inmates who may require extensive medical care. This incident is expected to revive conversations about prisoner rights and health care access in jails across the country.
