Madhya Pradesh Police personnel have been barred from uploading government, confidential or sensitive information to ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence platforms under a new set of 24-point social media guidelines. The rules also prohibit police personnel from creating or posting Instagram Reels while on duty or while wearing their uniforms.

Issued on the basis of directions from the Union Home Ministry, the guidelines regulate police personnel’s use of social media, communication with the media, handling of sensitive information and use of AI platforms. Violations could result in disciplinary action ranging from a show-cause notice to suspension under applicable police regulations and civil service conduct rules.

No Reels In Police Uniform

The guidelines prohibit police personnel from making or uploading Reels while on duty or while wearing the police uniform, whether they are officially on duty or not.

The rules are aimed at ensuring that official police duties and personal social media activity remain separate and that government resources and the police uniform are not used for personal publicity.

Police personnel have also been barred from using government vehicles, offices, residences, uniforms and other official resources for personal branding or publicity.

Officers have been cautioned against portraying departmental achievements as their own personal accomplishments.

Restrictions On AI And Sensitive Information

Under the new rules, police personnel cannot upload government, confidential or sensitive information to ChatGPT or other AI platforms.

Officers working in sensitive roles have also been instructed not to reveal details about the nature of their duties, workplaces or related activities on social media.

The guidelines also establish safeguards around information relating to arrests, raids and criminal investigations. Police personnel have been advised to share only essential facts and avoid disclosing investigative processes or details of planned future action that could affect an ongoing probe.

They have also been directed to ensure that social media posts do not suggest that an accused person has already been found guilty, keeping in mind the ongoing investigation as well as the judicial process.

Rules Extend To Personal Accounts

The restrictions are not limited to official police social media accounts. Personnel have also been asked not to use their personal accounts to express views on government policies and schemes or make political and religious statements on public platforms.

If a personal social media post appears to represent the official position of the government, the department may issue a clarification. Serious violations can lead to disciplinary action.

Police personnel have also been prohibited from using department-issued CUG SIM cards to create social media accounts.

Focus On Separating Duty From Personal Activity

The 24-point guidelines seek to regulate how police personnel communicate online while protecting official information and maintaining a distinction between their professional responsibilities and personal social media activity.

The rules cover social media posts, media communication, AI platforms, sensitive investigations, personal accounts and the use of official resources, with violations potentially attracting action under relevant police and civil service conduct rules.
