The Delhi Traffic Police has announced traffic restrictions in preparation for a motorcade rehearsal for the upcoming 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit. This rehearsal will take place on September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam, and is scheduled for the evening of September 8 from 7:45 pm to 10 pm. During this period, various roads within the national capital will experience controlled traffic movement and diversions.

To assist commuters, the traffic police advisory has identified 22 diversion points across central, south, east, and west Delhi. Key corridors will be under regulation, and alternate routes have been suggested for the convenience of travellers. Major roads affected by the upcoming event include Ring Road, Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, and several others.

Locations around India Gate, Pragati Maidan, and Connaught Place are also noted for regulated traffic. The traffic police have urged individuals travelling through these zones to adhere to the alternative routes as prescribed in the advisory, and to follow real-time instructions from officers stationed at diversion points.

Public Transport and Forward Planning Encouraged

Motorists are advised to plan their trips in advance, particularly those navigating through central and south Delhi during the rehearsal hours. The traffic police suggests that commuters opt for public transport, particularly the Metro, to circumvent potential delays due to the restrictions.

Emergency service vehicles will be prioritised during the rehearsal. The police have emphasised on the importance of preparation, advising that additional travel time should be factored in. Moreover, the recommended alternate routes include the Ring Road, NH-48, and Sardar Patel Marg, designed to help bypass the most affected corridors.

In addition, security measures are intensifying throughout Delhi in anticipation of the BRICS Summit. Checks have been reinforced at hotels, guesthouses, and other sensitive locations across the Delhi-NCR region, focusing particularly on tenant and staff verifications.

Comprehensive Security Measures in Place

Delhi is increasingly becoming fortified as part of its high-security protocol related to the summit. Counter-drone strategies have emerged as a crucial aspect of the security layout, with specific attention given to drones and similarly operated aerial devices during this period. The deployment of counter-UAS systems, including those developed by the DRDO, is expected to enhance aerial threat responses.

Furthermore, the CISF is collaborating with the Drone Federation of India to bolster counter-drone capabilities. This includes operational readiness and training initiatives alongside a proposed Centre of Excellence focused on drone technology.

Moreover, a dedicated security framework surrounding the network of airports, hotels, and summit venues is being established. Approximately ten hotels hosting visiting dignitaries have been scrutinised, with rehearsals for motorcade movements being executed between the hotels and Bharat Mandapam. Anti-sabotage teams and bomb disposal units are also conducting thorough security sweeps.

Enhanced Coordination and Community Compliance

Authorities anticipate deploying nearly 4,800 traffic personnel throughout Delhi to manage the flow of foreign delegations and VVIPs. This significant presence will commence around September 10, continuing until the delegations have departed. Personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces have been instructed to wear khaki uniforms to maintain visual uniformity.

An intelligence-led approach supplements these physical security measures, featuring continuous threat assessments and surveillance across various agencies. Police forces in adjacent areas are coordinating with Delhi Police to manage traffic issues and eliminate non-destination vehicles from restricted zones.

Additionally, civic measures are being implemented, including the deployment of approximately 300 sanitation workers and ten mechanical road sweepers to ensure cleanliness in public spaces leading up to the summit. Schools in Delhi have announced closures on September 11 in light of the high-profile event.
