Modi, Macron Push for Social Media Curbs to Protect Minors at AI Impact Summit

The CSR Journal Magazine

During the India AI Impact Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the critical need to safeguard children from the detrimental effects of artificial intelligence and social media. Modi highlighted that children’s safety should be prioritized similarly to how educational curriculums are designed, advocating for regulations that ensure the AI environment is secure and guided by family values.

Macron Urges Collaborative International Action

Macron conveyed his aspiration for India to join France and other nations in prohibiting access to social media platforms for minors below the age of 15. He articulated that the safety of children hinges not only on legislative frameworks but also on societal obligations. Stating that it is unnecessary for children to encounter online content that would be illegal in the physical world, he called for unified governmental efforts to establish a safe online environment.

India’s Role in the AI Revolution

The French President acknowledged India’s significant potential in the AI sector, stating that the country has defied previous skepticism about integrating its vast population into the digital economy. Macron noted that as part of this initiative, France is on a path to instate social media restrictions for minors, a movement supported by several European countries. He mentioned that Australia has already positioned itself as the first nation to restrict social media access for individuals under 16. This situation has prompted discussions in India, particularly with support from the ruling ally, the Telugu Desam Party, advocating for similar regulations.

Collaborative Efforts for a Safer Internet

Macron, while addressing Modi and an audience of international dignitaries and technology leaders, stressed the importance of collaboration among platforms, governments, and regulators to ensure that the internet remains a secure environment for its users. He reiterated France’s commitment to a shared vision with India, emphasizing equal access to AI as it emerges as a new field of strategic competition worldwide. Macron urged that establishing autonomy and driving innovation should be the joint objectives of both countries.

The Human Element in Technology and AI

Highlighting that the ongoing developments in AI represent more than just technological advancements, Macron framed them as integral to civilization. He applauded India for its achievements in providing digital access across various sectors, notably in identity verification and financial transactions, describing these milestones as pivotal narratives of societal progress. Additionally, he identified access to AI as crucial, asserting that both India and France share mutual goals in harnessing AI for the planetary good and promoting prosperity for all.

Future Collaboration in AI Development

Macron concluded by stating that those who blend innovation with responsibility will shape the future of AI. He expressed confidence that India and France will collaborate to define the foundational principles governing this domain while aligning their efforts with like-minded allies rooted in shared values. This cooperative stance signifies a mutual commitment to navigate the evolving landscape of technology and governance with an emphasis on ethical considerations and societal welfare.
